Resolume information

What are the typical responsibilities of a Resolume VJ or Operator during a live event?

During a live event, a Resolume VJ or Operator is responsible for designing, sequencing, and performing visual content that complements the atmosphere and music. This includes preparing video loops and effects in advance, setting up and testing equipment and connections, and real-time cueing or manipulating visuals in response to the performance and audience energy. Close collaboration with lighting designers, DJs, and stage managers is often necessary to sync visuals with other event elements. The role also involves troubleshooting technical issues on the fly and adapting visuals quickly to maintain a seamless show. Successful operators are both technically skilled and artistically attuned to the evolving dynamics of live entertainment.

What is a Resolume job?

A Resolume job typically involves using Resolume, a popular VJ and live visual performance software, to create and control real-time visuals for events, concerts, and installations. Professionals in this role design, program, and manipulate video content, often syncing visuals with music or live performances. They may work as VJs, motion designers, or AV technicians in entertainment, corporate events, or live productions. Strong skills in video mapping, graphic design, and media playback are essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Resolume position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Resolume Operator or VJ (visual jockey), you need a strong understanding of digital media, visual effects, and live event production, often supported by experience in VJ software like Resolume Arena or Avenue. Familiarity with projection mapping, MIDI controllers, video codecs, and sometimes certification in media production can be valuable assets. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help professionals collaborate with event organizers, musicians, and technical teams. These skills ensure seamless live visual performances and the ability to adapt to the fast-paced demands of live entertainment environments.

Job description

Who We Are

As science and technology increasingly shape our lives, the Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change.   Among the world's largest science centers and New England's most attended cultural institution, we engage nearly five million people a year - at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online.

The Museum's singular location connecting Boston and Cambridge puts us at the junction of some of the world's most influential academic institutions and industries, local and state government, schools, and the public. Trusted by each sector, we are ideally positioned to convene, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for all.  Come join us on our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone and living our vision for a world where science belongs to each of us for the good of all of us.

Why We Need You

In October 2026 the Museum will open the Public Science Common, a state-of-the-art convening and performance space for everything from daily science presentations, immersive theatre & dance productions, to high-profile spectacle events.

We are seeking a Video Supervisor to oversee and execute all video needs, and make meaningful contributions to the commissioning and opening of a new, global stage for science education. We are looking for a proactive collaborator to support all Museum stakeholders in using media to create compelling, memorable experiences for all audiences.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Supervise a video system consisting of motorized LED walls, as well as floor and wall projectors for immersive, two-plane video environments.
  • Serve as a thought-leader in video and projection design and collaborate with internal Museum departments and external partners in creating experiences for the Public Science Common, and venues across the Museum.
  • Act as the Museum's subject matter expert for video and projection, providing consultation and standards throughout planning, design, installation, commissioning, and ongoing operations.
  • Collaborate with Technical Director and other Supervisors to create systems, procedures, and documentation to support an always-on venue in a Museum that is open 7 days a week, 360 days a year. All staff are expected to develop familiarity with all venue systems, and be willing to assist across departments and cover when needed.
  • This position will work a flexible schedule and run any complex or premiere events (with some nights and weekends required) and train staff members for daily, recurring operations.

What We're Looking For (Competencies)

  • Experienced with Panasonic & Christie video projectors, LED walls, and media servers.
  • Experienced with building and running QLab workspaces. Ideally experienced with other video software such as Disguise, Isadora, Resolume, TouchDesigner, or have a willingness to learn.
  • Experienced with Adobe suite (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop) and media creation software. Additional experience with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, or 3D modeling software like Maya a plus.
  • Experienced with capturing video and live camera switching, for livestream and recorded events. Able to combine content and live cameras on multiple surfaces for a complete video design.
  • Comfortable working at heights of ~25' on a tension wire grid, as well as from ladders and personnel lifts. Comfortable working in backstage show conditions including but not limited to: fog, haze, strobes, dim lights, and loud sounds.

This is a fully onsite position.

How We Work-Our Values

Mission-Focused: We inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone.

Audience-Driven: Everything we do begins with the people we serve.

Innovative: We are curious, take smart risks, share responsibility, and own outcomes.

Generous: We offer time and energy towards common goals.
