Job description

Position: Residential Counselor

The Residential Counselor is responsible to deliver wellness and recovery-oriented case management and support services to service recipients in accordance with the New Jersey Department of Human Services-Division of Mental Health and Addictions Services regulations. The residential counselor provides support directly to the residents, including but not limited to: skill development, supportive counseling, transportation, crisis intervention, assistance with task completion, vocational and social support.

Location: Edison, NJ 08820 (Middlesex County)

Minimum Qualifications:

The position shall have one of the following:

  • A bachelorโ€™s degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health, health or other appropriate human services related discipline or
  • A license as a registered nurse; a combination of one or more years of college, plus related work or life experience together equaling four years or
  • The individual is required to have at least one year of related work or life experience if the four-year college degree does not meet the requirements above.
  • A license as a practical nurse plus two years of related work or life experience or a high school diploma or the equivalent, plus four years of related work or life experience.
  • This position shall also have a valid state driverโ€™s license with a safe driving record that meets agency procedures.

Residential Counselor Principal Responsibilities:

  1. On-site consumer resident supervision or support including but not limited teaching, behavioral modeling, assistance to complete ADLโ€™s, and other tasks.
  2. Communicating observations and information about the consumer resident to the program manager, RN, DDD case manager and other treatment team members.
  3. Supervising, organizing and supporting recreational and/or socialization activities for consumers.
  4. Transportation
  5. Assist consumers in the self-administration of medication.
  6. Residential counseling
  7. Crisis intervention services (but not including crisis intervention counseling)
  8. Participation in the development of the individual habilitation plan and other required assessments.
  9. Participation in individual service coordination activities.
  10. Documenting observations, information and services provided to the consumer resident in progress notes.
  11. Perform all other duties as assigned.
  12. Cooperate with Volunteers of America and/or State of New Jersey Division staff in any inspection and/or investigation.
