Resident Assessment Coordinators are healthcare professionals, often registered nurses, who oversee the assessment and care planning process for residents in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes. They are responsible for coordinating and completing the Minimum Data Set (MDS), which is a federally mandated assessment used to determine the clinical needs and care plans for residents. Their work ensures that residents receive appropriate care, facilities remain compliant with regulations, and accurate documentation is maintained for reimbursement. Resident Assessment Coordinators collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop individualized care plans and monitor resident outcomes.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a resident assessment coordinator?

To thrive as a Resident Assessment Coordinator, you need a solid background in nursing, detailed knowledge of the Minimum Data Set (MDS), and current RN or LPN/LVN licensure. Familiarity with MDS assessment software, electronic health records (EHRs), and Medicare/Medicaid regulations is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing documentation and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
