What is a reseller?

A Reseller job involves purchasing products or services from a supplier or manufacturer and then selling them to customers at a profit. Resellers can operate in various industries, including electronics, fashion, and software. They often manage inventory, set pricing, and market products through online platforms or physical stores. Some resellers work independently, while others collaborate with a company as an authorized distributor. Success in this role requires strong sales, marketing, and customer service skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reseller?

To thrive as a Reseller, you need strong sales acumen, market research skills, and knowledge of inventory management, often gained through experience in sales or e-commerce. Familiarity with e-commerce platforms, CRM systems, and online payment solutions is typically necessary. Exceptional negotiation, networking, and customer service skills help build lasting relationships with clients and suppliers. These capabilities enable Resellers to source competitively, manage transactions efficiently, and adapt to changing market demands for business growth.

What are the typical challenges faced by resellers, and how can they be addressed?

Resellers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating market prices, maintaining a reliable supply chain, and handling customer expectations regarding product quality and delivery times. To address these issues, effective Resellers build strong relationships with trusted suppliers, stay updated on market trends, and implement robust inventory management practices. Clear communication with clients about product details and delivery schedules also helps establish trust and minimize misunderstandings. By proactively addressing these common hurdles, Resellers can enhance their reputation, boost customer satisfaction, and grow their business.

How do you become a reseller?

To become a reseller, you typically need to choose a product or service to sell, establish a relationship with the supplier or manufacturer, and obtain the necessary authorization or reseller agreement. Resellers often require basic sales skills, knowledge of the products, and may need to meet certain sales targets or certifications depending on the industry. Setting up an online or physical sales platform is also common to reach customers effectively.

Is reselling a good career?

Reselling can be a viable career for individuals who have strong sales skills, market knowledge, and the ability to source products at low cost. Success often depends on understanding supply and demand, managing inventory, and using online platforms or marketplaces effectively. It can offer flexible hours but may require significant effort to build a profitable business.

Job description

Join the Future of Commerce with Whatnot!
Whatnot is the largest live shopping platform in North America and Europe to buy, sell, and discover the things you love. Whether it's trading cards, fashion, electronics, or live plants, our sellers are building real businesses across hundreds of categories. We're building live commerce at a scale that's never been done in the West, and there's no playbook to copy. The people here are shaping how an entirely new industry develops.
As a remote co-located team, we're inspired by our values and anchored in hubs across the US, UK, Ireland, Poland, Germany, and Australia. We move fast, stay close to our users, and focus on the work that drives the most impact.
We're one of the fastest growing marketplaces and were recently named the #1 Best Startup Employer in America by Forbes. Check out the latest Whatnot updates on our news and engineering blogs and join us as we enable anyone to turn their passion into a business and bring people together through commerce.
Role
We're looking for current or former Whatnot sellers to join the team and support fellow sellers on the platform. Our Customer Experience team is responsible for driving the best possible experience through process improvement, order management, and problem-solving. As part of this Seller Customer Experience team, you will be a primary advocate for our seller community. You will help other resellers navigate the platform, resolve issues quickly, and grow their businesses on Whatnot. If something went wrong, you own making it right. You'll deeply understand the reseller grind, including the sourcing, listings, and shipping logistics, and be the person who makes it easier.
  • Interact with sellers with a seller-first attitude, understanding the unique needs and pressures of running a resale business
  • Resolve seller issues regarding payments, payouts, order disputes, shipments, and platform questions with high quality and urgency
  • Become a deep expert in Whatnot's seller tools, policies, and processes to drive positive outcomes for the reseller community
  • Work cross-functionally with Trust & Safety, Payments, and Product teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex seller escalations
  • Identify patterns in seller pain points and proactively surface opportunities to improve the seller experience
You
People who do well at Whatnot tend to be comfortable figuring things out as they go, biased toward action, and genuinely curious about what they're building. They care more about outcomes than credit and stay close to the product and the people using it.
As our next Seller Customer Experience Agent, you'll bring a seller's perspective and a service mindset. Here's what we're hoping to see in your background:
  • Weekend availability required.
  • Active or former Whatnot seller.
  • Support experience handling email and/or chat, ideally supporting sellers or merchants, is a plus.
  • Hands-on understanding of reseller operations such as sourcing, listing, fulfillment, returns, and payouts.
  • Experience with customer-facing support tools like Zendesk, Kustomer, or Intercom is a plus.
  • Familiarity with collectibles categories (trading cards, sneakers, vintage, etc.)
  • Proactive problem-solver and process-improver.
  • Bachelor's degree or college experience preferred.
Benefits
  • Generous Time off Policy
  • Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, Vision
  • Work From Home Support
    • Home office setup allowance
    • Monthly allowance for cell phone and internet
  • Care benefits
    • Monthly allowance for wellness
    • Annual allowance towards Childcare
    • Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses
  • Retirement; 401k offering for Traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and Pension plans internationally
  • Monthly allowance to dogfood the app
    • All Whatnauts are expected to develop a deep understanding of our product. We're passionate about building the best user experience, and all employees are expected to use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller as part of their job (our dogfooding budget makes this fun and easy!).
  • Parental Leave
    • 16 weeks of paid parental leave + one month gradual return to work *company leave allowances run concurrently with country leave requirements which take precedence.
EOE
