This opportunity supports the FDOT's Traffic Engineering Research Lab with the evaluation of ITS and electronic Traffic Control Devices. The ITS Research Lab Engineer will create, modify, and execute test cases to ensure the next generation of ITS and Traffic Control Devices are effective, safe, and up to FDOT standards before they can be used on projects throughout the state.
The role is responsible for producing technical reports, reviewing engineering plans and specifications for assigned evaluations, performing research, development, and delivery in partnership with the project team.
The ideal candidate will be able to leverage their ITS experience, as well as their experience with technical tools, programs and software in order to deliver a quality product, that is on time, on budget, and meets Client expectations.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems, electronic Traffic Control Devices, Signalized Intersection Control, Transportation Management Centers, or Tolling
  • Displays proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and evaluation tools such as a multimeter; or other software and hardware as required for job assignments.
  • Ability to accurately interpret, follow, and execute written and verbal technical procedures, test protocols, safety requirements, and operational instructions in a structured evaluation or laboratory environment.
  • Ability to perform work in indoor laboratory, outdoor field, and roadside environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, traffic, and construction areas.
  • A detail-orientated approach to task management and documentation are required for this role.
  • Strong time management skills are required for this role.
  • The ability to work well as a part of a team.
  • Technical writing skills.

What We Prefer:

  • Experience with the installation, integration, troubleshooting, and/or use of roadside ITS devices.
  • High-level familiarity with networking.
  • IMSA Certifications
