Job description

Key Position Functions:

  • Coordinate R&D lab schedule.
  • Build and lead high-performing lab team through effective resourcing, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and a culture of accountability and safety.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers by imparting technical expertise, engineering and lab best practices to strengthen overall team capability and long-term career success.
  • Manage risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies, ensuring proactive responses to schedule and cost threats.
  • Review R&D test procedures and reports for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, industry standards, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure all safety protocols are followed and conduct safety training as required.
  • Design and implement the systems and procedures required to run the R&D Lab.
  • Ensure that all Lab equipment is maintained and calibrated in a fit for use state.
  • Facilitate positive changes in laboratory systems and procedures by proactively leading initiatives to drive safety, efficiencies and adoption of the latest lab technologies.
  • Interpret testing results and data to provide solutions and advise on how to improve tests and products.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving engineering work to ensure all requirements and schedule are maintained.
  • Actively contribute and build a positive culture of safety and continuous improvement within the team by identifying concerns, bringing solutions, and looking for opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that the housekeeping in the lab is kept to a high standard. Implement and maintain systems to assist, such as 5S.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety by consistently taking the necessary precautions and ensuring compliance with all internal requirements and applicable OH&S requirements.
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency when executing tests and communicate promptly when issues or roadblocks arise using the appropriate escalation channels.
  • Plan and anticipate challenges, proposing solutions, and asking for support when required.

Preferred candidates will possess a combination of the following qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University or Technical Institute
  • Membership with APEGA or eligible to get membership: P. Eng is an asset
  • Knowledge of wellhead and pipeline equipment
  • Minimum 10 years industrial testing experience in an R&D Lab environment
  • Minimum 7 years management experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Ability to read and write English documents
  • Proficient Technical Writing
  • Ability to coordinate and execute multiple projects simultaneously with the capacity to work independently, coupled with the ability to plan and perform work with minimal direction and supervision
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables and situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Experience with mentoring and building high performing teams for long-term success
