Job description

Job Title: Senior Medical TechnologistDepartment: Laboratory - AdministrationLocation: Newark-Wayne Community Hospital | 1200 Driving Park Ave. Newark, NY 14513Hours Per Week: 20Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 6:00a - 6:00p, every third weekend rotation required

SUMMARY

As a member of the professional medical team, accurately performs clinical laboratory analyses and examinations by approved department procedures on blood, urine, body fluids and tissues within a published turn-around time using a variety of instruments and methods to assist in physician diagnosis and treatment. They are expected to utilize complex problem-solving skills in resolving clinical and instrument problems. This position requires exercise of independent judgment, theoretical knowledge and responsibility. Ensures the provision of high-quality laboratory/diagnostic services to patients and physicians and full compliance with all regulatory standards. May provide weekend/holiday supervisory coverage as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Correctly performs testing in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.

  • Communicates stat and critical lab results and prolonged instrument malfunctions causing delays in test results to physicians, nursing units and other appropriate medical personnel.

  • Performance of QC, routine and advanced maintenance and analyte/instrument troubleshooting activities.

  • Accurately prepares reagents and maintains proper inventory of laboratory section supplies with appropriate cost containment in mind.

  • Maintains knowledge of required computer functions associated with ordering testing, performing testing, resulting testing and calling up various reports to assist in completing testing and the management of workflow.

  • Meets all regulatory lab requirements consistently.

  • Act as key operator and technical consultant to technologists, technicians and/or students for an area or instrumentation.

  • Coordinate and assist in development and validation of new procedures/instrumentation

  • Coordinate and assist in the training of new and existing employees on procedures and instrumentation

  • Participation in the competency assessments for staff.

  • Supervisory review of Quality Control results, maintenance records or other quality assurance activities, including corrective action, as needed.

  • Assistance with inventory management (e.g. assigned inventory list).

  • Perform “extra” or advanced maintenance and/or troubleshooting activities, including Advanced Preventative Maintenance, QC/Validations for minor equipment (centrifuges, pipettes, etc.).

  • Assists in the performance of specialized and complex diagnostic procedures.

  • Participation in Regulatory preparation, such as routine Audits/Tracers or responsibility for a section specific “checklist” or portion of the organization Regulatory Standards (NYS, TJC, CAP, DNV, etc.).

  • Order and/or coordinate proficiency testing for department or subspecialty; submission of results to regulatory agency; review of final results and corrective action, as needed.

  • I nvolvement in department Quality Improvement Project and/or Department QA/QM monitors.

  • Participation in Department, Location or System-wide committee or project.

  • Approval to write or modify Standard Operating Procedures for new or existing procedures.

  • Routine supervisory review of Standard Operating Procedures, as per regulatory requirement schedule for their department

  • Coordinate database functions of the Laboratory Information System.

  • Participation in the Laboratory Ambassador Program.

  • May conduct research and development of new or updated technologies and provide written evaluation to supervisor/manager/director.

  • Responsibility for department scheduling and/or Kronos Timekeeper.

  • Teaches in the Medical Laboratory Science Program and Lab rotations as called upon to do so.

  • Coordinates with the Medical Laboratory Science Program administration and all areas of the lab to develop curriculum, lecture objectives, student evaluations, written and digital exams.

  • Participates in classroom instructions

  • Monitors student activities

  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings

  • Participates in accreditation reviews and reports as needed.

  • Additional Duties and Responsibilities as requested by Manager.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Technologist

  • NYS Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in a laboratory leadership position

  • Certification by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
