Job description

The Development Associate support the Development team in all aspects of the multifamily development process from site identification through project handoff to construction. The Development Associate will assist in due diligence, financial analysis, design coordination, entitlement efforts, and project management tasks. This position provides exposure to every phase of the development process and serves as a training ground for advancement to Development Manager.


Training/Education

  • 1–2 years of experience in real estate development, construction, finance, or a related field; multifamily experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Real Estate, Finance, Urban Planning, Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related discipline.

 

Experience/Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); familiarity with Bluebeam, project management, and financial modeling software is a plus
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and eager to learn from senior team members.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Development Managers and senior team members in performing due diligence, including zoning and code review, title work, environmental assessments, and utility assessments.
  • Support initial site selection and feasibility studies, including market research and conceptual planning.
  • Help prepare and maintain project schedules and task trackers for due diligence and entitlement activities.
  • Coordinate with consultants (civil engineers, architects, and other design professionals) to gather and organize design documents, reports, and deliverables.
  • Assist in preparing documentation for entitlement applications, municipal submittals, and internal project approvals.
  • Support the development of project budgets in collaboration with the Pre-Construction Department.
  • Assist in assembling and formatting Investment Committee materials and other internal presentations.
  • Contribute to financial analyses and underwriting models, updating assumptions, and preparing data for review by senior team members.
  • Track project expenses, invoices, and budgets in coordination with accounting and development team members.
  • Help coordinate communication between internal departments (construction, asset management, and property management) to ensure alignment across project stages.
  • Participate in site visits and assist in documenting project progress and conditions.
  • Provide general administrative and project support to the Development team as needed.
  • Exhibit a proactive, problem-solving mindset and a willingness to learn.
  • Effectively collaborate with in-house property management leadership to evaluate achievable rental levels, expense comparable and expense estimates for development opportunities being considered.
  • Become knowledgeable with costs associated with development, including physical construction costs, site development costs, pre-development costs and estimates through collaboration with Develop Manager and Preconstruction estimate submittals.
  • Analyze RFP’s for opportunity, feasibility and market research.
  • Effectively communicate with brokers, lenders, prospective clients, housing agencies, government agencies, legal counsel as required to perform the above duties.
  • Ensure company policies, procedures and guidelines are complied with in a professional manner and are demonstrated in all oral and written communications.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.
