Summary
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing, managing, and executing strategies to win new business across key markets. This role blends strategic planning with hands-on engagement, including client outreach, proposal development, opportunity qualification, and collaboration with engineering teams. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the engineering consulting landscape, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a proven track record of converting opportunities into revenue.
Responsibilities
Work Product, Tasks, and Activities (Include but are not limited to the following). All activities will apply to ensure their respective team complies as well as themselves.
  • Make sales calls to gain access to new leads and follow up on upcoming or previously bid projects.
  • Update and follow the sales process developed in the current CRM
  • Review external sales database for new projects and opportunities, make calls as needed to secure new bid opportunities, maintain current listing of potential projects.
  • Attend weekly (in-person or phone) meeting with Senior Vice President to discuss sales activity, pipeline and funnel.
  • Facility bi-weekly client coordination calls with the seller-doer team.
  • Mentor and develop new seller-doers and enhance skills of existing seller-doer team with a goal to close out more opportunities with a win.
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and networking forums.
  • Ensure both internal and external project handoff meetings are scheduled for proposed work. Submit newly closed projects and maintain engagement completely through onboarding process.
  • Maintain new customer relationships beyond project-by-project bid. Develop relationships with Developers,
  • Owners, providers of services that enable NV5 to expand target work.
  • Provide input and feedback to the Senior Vice President to assist in the development of business plans.
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize emerging market opportunities across targeted industries.
  • Develop and execute a multi-year business development strategy aligned with company goals.
  • Conduct market research, competitive analysis, and positioning assessments.

Physical Requirements
  • Work using a personal computer for long periods.
  • Frequently required to use hands/fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls.
  • Constantly be able to focus vision on objects at a close range.
  • Typical travel time will average 50% but can peak at certain times up to 75%.

Essential Functions
  • To generate new relationships for NV5 in the Midwest and create opportunities to propose on new work for new clients.
  • To grow and develop a seller-doer team that can multiply business development efforts.
  • To lead the creation of a new strategic business development plan and engage the leadership team in execution of that plan.

Qualifications
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
  • Certifications/Licenses:
  • Required: Any licenses or technical certifications related to the operations of the business are preferred.

Experience Required:
  • Experience required in Engineering Consulting preferably within the Industrial, Higher Education, and Commercial market sectors.

Experience:
  • 3 years' minimum experience in business development preferably with an additional 10-15 years of engineering consulting experience.

Competencies:
  • Full knowledge of sales operations. Understanding of how NV5's suite of services will benefit customers and the ability to articulate/communicate the concepts to the customers.
  • Required: Microsoft Office Suite, sales database and contact relationship management (CRM) software utilized by NV5. Ability to learn customer sales and accounting as they relate to customer programs. Ability to use and interpret sales software tools such as HubSpot or similar.

Analytical/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrate ability to create and cultivate target contacts for engaging new customers. Ability to articulate/communicate to the operations group(s) all aspects of a sold contract's scope and deliverables including any particular customer nuances.
