Job description

Title: Laboratory Technician / Fermentation Technician

Duration: 12+ Months Contract (Likely Extension)

Location: Indianapolis, IN 46077

Shift: Days | 40 Hours/Week + Overtime | Weekend Work Required (1-3 Weekend Days per Month)


Position Summary

• Support operations within a pilot-scale fermentation and chemical production laboratory.

• Perform hands-on laboratory activities including fermenter operations, sampling, equipment maintenance, and documentation.

• Execute experiments and laboratory procedures in accordance with SOPs and established protocols.

• Work in a highly collaborative environment supporting research, production, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Ideal for entry-level candidates with a strong scientific background and an interest in laboratory operations.


Responsibilities

• Oversee fermenter operations including sterilization, inoculation, cell growth, feeding, harvesting, cell de-vitalization, troubleshooting, repair, and cleaning.

• Apply sterile techniques for inoculating and sampling shake flasks.

• Conduct fermenter sampling and monitoring during routine work hours.

• Operate autoclaves and safely perform acid/base mixing activities.

• Perform off-line sample analysis using laboratory equipment including viscometers, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and pH meters.

• Conduct preventive maintenance and routine upkeep of laboratory equipment.

• Execute laboratory procedures and research tasks according to SOPs and established protocols.

• Document experimental work accurately and maintain complete laboratory records.

• Identify deviations from expected results and contribute data to technical reports.

• Manage laboratory inventory, supply ordering, receiving, and stocking activities.

• Assist in process improvement initiatives, cost reduction efforts, and Six Sigma activities.

• Participate in workload management and contribute to overall team performance.

• Support laboratory operations through equipment preparation, assembly setup, glassware cleaning, and related activities.

• Recognize equipment malfunctions and perform routine maintenance activities.


Qualifications

Education:

• Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, Physics, or a related scientific discipline.

• Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.


Experience:

• Entry-level to approximately 5 years of laboratory experience.

• Prior laboratory experience is highly preferred.

• Experience working in fermentation, microbiology, chemical production, biotechnology, or related laboratory environments is preferred.

• Experience with sterile laboratory techniques is preferred.

• Experience operating laboratory instruments and equipment is preferred.

• Candidates with extensive experience may be considered overqualified for this position.

• Interview Process: Two-stage interview process consisting of a Teams interview with hiring managers followed by a Teams or onsite laboratory interview.

• Schedule Flexibility: Typical start time between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM with attendance required before the daily team meeting.

• Weekend Coverage: Required approximately 1-3 weekend days per month for sampling and process monitoring activities.

• Exposure: Candidates may be exposed to nuts, plants, chemicals, and latex.

• Training Program: Extensive hands-on training with long-term development opportunities.
