What is a research attorney?

Research attorneys are legal professionals who specialize in conducting legal research and analysis to support attorneys, judges, or law firms. They review case law, statutes, legal precedents, and other relevant materials to prepare legal memoranda, briefs, and recommendations. Their work is essential in helping legal teams understand complex legal issues and make informed decisions. Research attorneys may work in courts, government agencies, private law firms, or corporate legal departments.

What are the main challenges research attorneys face when supporting litigation teams?

Research Attorneys often navigate tight deadlines and large volumes of complex legal information when supporting litigation teams. They must quickly identify and synthesize relevant case law, statutes, and legal precedents, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness under pressure. Collaboration with litigators and paralegals is key, as Research Attorneys provide foundational analysis that shapes legal strategies and filings. Staying updated on evolving legal trends and jurisdictional nuances is also essential to delivering effective research support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor degree, strong legal research and writing skills, and a thorough understanding of relevant laws and precedents. Familiarity with legal research databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and citation management tools is typically required. Job description

Research & Writing Attorney

ALBUQUERQUE, NM

No relocation required — Albuquerque-area and remote-eligible candidates welcome.

About Us

Parnall Law Firm is the most highly reviewed and largest personal injury firm in New Mexico, dedicated to client service and results.

  • Top Culture: “Best Place to Work” and “Top Workplace” for six and five consecutive years, respectively — awards based on anonymous feedback from our employees collected by an independent organization.
  • Unmatched Support: Experienced investigators (retired police officers), dedicated case managers, and paralegals.
  • Team Environment: Collaborative and creative attorneys who foster teamwork and mentorship across every practice team.

Join us to focus on what you do best: delivering the legal research and writing that powers our attorneys’ advocacy for injured clients and maximizes case outcomes.

Who Are We Looking For? (Requirements)

  • Active license to practice law in New Mexico, or eligibility for admission.
  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to translate research into persuasive, well-supported drafts.
  • Experience drafting motions, briefs, memoranda, and other litigation documents.
  • Personal injury or civil litigation experience preferred; insurance defense or appellate background is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with trial attorneys and Team Leads across multiple case teams and manage competing deadlines.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
  • Sign-on bonus: $25,000 paid incrementally over the first 6 months of employment
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Health, dental, and vision insurance; life, short and long term disability insurance; 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Time Off: Paid time off (PTO) and select paid holidays.
  • Work-Life Balance: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM — a research and writing role with no court appearances required.

Your Role

As a Research & Writing Attorney, you will provide the legal analysis and drafting that support our trial attorneys’ mission: maximizing recovery for the value of our clients’ harm and the wrong that caused it. You will be a key member of a team dedicated to making a meaningful impact for injured clients across New Mexico.

Duties / Responsibilities

Legal Research:

  • Research New Mexico and applicable law on liability, damages, coverage, and procedural issues arising in personal injury and premises liability matters.
  • Monitor and summarize developments in New Mexico case law, statutes, and court rules relevant to the firm’s practice.

Drafting:

  • Prepare motions, responses, briefs, and legal memoranda in support of pre-litigation and litigation case teams.
  • Draft discovery-related legal analysis and assist with pleadings as needed.

Case Strategy Support:

  • Collaborate with trial attorneys and Team Leads to identify legal issues, anticipate defense arguments, and strengthen case positions.
  • Provide research support for settlement negotiations, mediation, and trial preparation.

General Responsibilities:

  • Deliver timely, well-supported written work product that meets firm quality standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with attorneys and staff to ensure cases move efficiently through the process.
