Job description

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS), invites applications for an academic position within the Division of Pediatric Respirology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. This position is a part of the Alberta Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). 

This full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure-track (contingent) position comprises approximately 65% time for clinical service and 35% time for academic pursuits, divided between research, teaching, and administrative duties (negotiable).

  • MD degree (or equivalent)
  • Completed subspecialty training in Pediatrics and subspecialty residency in Pediatric Respirology.
  • Certified or eligible to become a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Pediatric Respirology) or equivalent. 
  • Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Considered an asset: 

  • Additional training in sleep medicine and/or recent experience caring for pediatric patients with sleep disorders and those requiring long-term invasive or non-invasive ventilation

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is Canada's first and largest province-wide, fully integrated health system, responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta as well as to some residents of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.  The Stollery Children's Hospital is a full-service pediatric hospital and centre for complex pediatric care and research.  It is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta.  It has among the highest inpatient volumes of any children's hospital in Canada and serves a geographical area of over 500,000 km. The Stollery Children's Hospital is the Western Canadian centre that provides support for children with lung transplant.  

The successful applicant will join seven academic pediatric respirologists providing a full spectrum of clinical respiratory medicine services. In addition to clinical care, the division is active in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has a fully accredited Pediatric Respirology subspecialty-training program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a pediatric sleep subspecialty-training program. There are numerous trainees (undergraduate and postgraduate students, residents and clinical/research fellows) that rotate through the division each academic year. The division also has an active basic and clinical science research program, collaborating locally, nationally, and internationally.

About WCHRI

The Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) supports researchers within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services. With a focus on advancing women's, children's, and perinatal health, WCHRI provides extensive resources for faculty conducting research in these areas.
As a member of WCHRI, the successful candidate will have access to funding opportunities, biostatistical expertise, qualitative design support, knowledge translation resources, and clinical trials services. WCHRI also invests in research development by supporting trainees through scholarships, fellowships, and travel grants for presenting research outcomes.

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the Schedule A of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

  • Clinical Excellence: Provide a full spectrum of clinical respiratory medicine services including sleep medicine, home ventilation, complex asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, congenital and acquired lung diseases, and lung transplant. The division participates in multiple multidisciplinary clinics serving children with neuromuscular, aerodigestive, sickle cell and other complex diseases, as well as multidisciplinary team approach to children receiving complex therapies such tracheostomies or bone marrow transplants.
  • Education and Mentorship: Teach and mentor learners at all levels in clinical and academic settings.
  • Research Contribution: Conduct impactful research in Pediatric Respirology according to time allocated to research, and engage with the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI), which provides a robust infrastructure for research excellence in women's and children's health.
  • Collaboration and Engagement: Work closely with other programs, interdisciplinary teams, and healthcare professionals to advance Pediatric Respirology care and the education of Pediatric Respirology trainees.
