Job Overview

We are seeking a Veterinary Technician Assistant II for our Safety Assessment site located in Reno, Nevada. 

The Veterinary Technician Assistant II will be responsible for surgical technical duties, intermediate and advanced surgical procedures.

BASIC SUMMARY:  

Responsible for assisting the veterinary staff in the documentation and management of all laboratory animal health cases.  Also responsible for daily heath observations, preventive health care, environmental enrichment and handling and restraint of laboratory animals.

  • Works in a research environment, which requires use of sharp objects, working around mechanical parts, heavy mobile caging, working with or near known or unknown toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biological hazards, exposure to fumes and airborne particles.
  • The employee regularly works with live animals with risk of exposure to dander, allergens, zoonotic disease, and biohazards in a windowless vivarium.
  • The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high depending upon the species housed, and vivarium locations
Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform and be proficient in basic veterinary technical skills (i.e. treatments, collection of biological samples, TB tests, veterinary observations, etc).
  • Provide environmental enrichment for laboratory animals according to facility and Federal guidelines.
  • Perform animal follow-up observations as required.
  • Monitor animal heath, visually and by following detailed schedules.
  • Generate animal treatment records and perform, track and schedule follow-ups.
  • Assist in keeping inventory and stocking the vet rooms (i.e. drugs and supplies). Assist in organizing and maintaining the vet exam rooms.
  • Clean animal areas, transports animals and maintains related equipment.
  • Record keeping of required logs.
  • Observe animals and reports apparent abnormalities.
  • Sanitize cages and other related equipment as may be required.
  • Administer basic veterinary treatments to include IM injections, SC., etc.
  • Perform routine preventive health care skills including nail/teeth clipping/trimming, ear exams and dental exams.
  • Measure and distribute feed to laboratory animals in accordance with established procedures for facility.
  • Perform quarantine and isolation procedures as required.
  • Perform duties associated in the receipt, transferring and shipment of animals.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.).
  • Experience: 1-2 years related experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure: ALAT preferred

The starting wage for this position starts at $22 USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
