What does a research and development mechanical engineer do?

A Research and Development (R&D) Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing new mechanical devices or systems. They use engineering principles to create prototypes, improve existing products, and solve technical challenges. Their work often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, conducting experiments, and analyzing data to enhance product performance and efficiency. R&D Mechanical Engineers play a key role in driving innovation within industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods.

What are some common challenges faced by research and development mechanical engineers during the product development cycle?

Research and Development Mechanical Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative designs with manufacturability and cost constraints, meeting tight project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. They may also need to iterate prototypes quickly based on feedback from cross-functional teams, including design, testing, and manufacturing. Collaboration and effective communication are essential for addressing unexpected technical issues and integrating new technologies into existing systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research and development mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research and Development Mechanical Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like ANSYS), and knowledge of prototyping and testing methodologies are essential. Creativity, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for innovating and collaborating on complex projects. These skills and qualities enable engineers to develop innovative solutions, improve products, and maintain a competitive edge in technology-driven industries.

What is the difference between Research And Development Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectResearch And Development Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentLabs, R&D departments, innovation-focused settingsDesign offices, manufacturing facilities, product development teams
Industry UsageResearch institutions, product innovation, prototype developmentProduct design, manufacturing, engineering firms

Research And Development Mechanical Engineers focus on creating new products and improving existing ones through experimentation and innovation. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily work on designing and developing mechanical components and systems for manufacturing. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, their work environments and objectives differ significantly, with R&D engineers emphasizing innovation and prototyping, and design engineers focusing on detailed product development.

Job description

R&D Mechanical Design Engineer
Description -
The PageWide Industrial Division of HP designs and delivers complex, high-volume digital printing presses to the international printing market. Utilizing inkjet technology with nearly 40 years of core technology development experience, these presses deliver unmatched print quality, speed, and productivity, driving innovation in various graphics market segments including publishing, direct mail/marketing, general commercial printing, and packaging.
As a PWI Mechanical Engineer you will work in a dynamic and changing environment, designing mechanical systems and sub-systems for current and next generation digital inkjet web press platforms. This will require interdisciplinary problem-solving and leadership skills where you will engage closely with Customers, other R&D teams, Operations, Manufacturing, Procurement and Supplier engineering teams to bring new products and technology from ideas to reality.
As a successful new product design engineer, you will create designs both internally, using HP's 3D and 2D CAD tools, as well as directing external resources as needed. You will research new technologies and provide innovative solutions to solve problems, meet design objectives and deliver new products to the market. You will assume full engineering responsibility for designs, documenting all aspects, including BOMs, drawings, assembly docs and Theory of Operations, to ensure smooth manufacturing and functionality in the field leading up to the successful transfer of responsibility to other teams for long term support. Additionally, you will consult on projects/designs from other teams to provide your expertise and help team members improve their contributions.
Responsibilities
  • Design engineering solutions for mechanical and electro-mechanical hardware based on established engineering principles in accordance with development technology practices and guidelines.
  • Develop and implement parameters and test plans for new and existing designs, including validation of tolerances, form/fit/function, shock and vibration, electromagnetic interference, safety, reliability, system power measurements & acoustics.
  • Lead and/or work on cross-functional, multi-disciplinary project teams with other engineers and development partners to develop reliable, cost effective and high-quality solutions for highly complex products.
  • Collaborate and communicate with management, internal and outsourced development partners, and other key stakeholders regarding design status, project progress, and issue resolution.
  • Represent the mechanical design team for all phases of larger and more complex development projects.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's (undergraduate) degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (preference given to Mechanical Engineering, but relevant work experience/expertise will be considered)
  • Typically, 5-7 years of mechanical design experience
  • Ability to work across multiple technical disciplines
  • Experience in delivering technical solutions and systems across all phases of the design cycle (concept through prototype through manufacturing through end of life/obsolescence)
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills
  • Proactive, innovative, self-motivating character
  • Ability to adapt and respond quickly and appropriately to changing business needs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
