Renewable Energy Project Development information

What is renewable energy project development?

Renewable energy project development refers to the process of planning, designing, financing, constructing, and operating energy projects that use renewable resources such as solar, wind, hydro, or biomass. This field involves identifying suitable locations, obtaining permits, conducting environmental assessments, securing funding, and managing the construction and operation of energy facilities. Professionals in this area work to bring clean energy projects from concept to completion, often collaborating with government agencies, investors, and local communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in renewable energy project development?

Success in Renewable Energy Project Development requires a strong background in project management, engineering or environmental science, and a solid understanding of renewable energy technologies, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project), permitting processes, and industry regulations, as well as certifications like PMP or LEED, are highly valued. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help professionals collaborate with diverse stakeholders and overcome project challenges. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time and within budget while ensuring compliance and fostering sustainable energy solutions.

What are some typical challenges faced during the early stages of renewable energy project development?

In the early stages of renewable energy project development, professionals often encounter challenges such as securing land rights, navigating complex permitting processes, and engaging with local communities. Additionally, assessing grid connection feasibility and managing project financing are common hurdles. Successfully addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with legal, environmental, and engineering teams, as well as proactive stakeholder communication to ensure project goals are met within regulatory and budgetary constraints.

With a rapidly expanding pipeline of renewable energy projects across Canada, Arup is seeking a Canada Renewable Energy Project Leader to strengthen our leadership, technical delivery, and market presence across wind, solar, storage and emerging energy technologies. This role can be based out of our Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver office.

Our team is actively delivering renewable energy projects nationwide to support Canada's transition to a low-carbon energy system. This role will play a central part in advancing Arup's position across the full renewable energy value chain and shape Canada's renewable energy future - working across a diverse portfolio of projects while combining technical leadership with market-facing growth responsibilities, collaborating with Arup's global network of experts, and contributing to a purpose-driven organization committed to sustainability and innovation.

The position combines project leadership, technical excellence, and team development, with responsibility spanning multiple renewable technologies, including:

  • Onshore and offshore wind

    • Ensure strong commercial governance, contract management and risk mitigation.
    • Lead or support proposals, bids and commercial negotiations.
  • Technical Leadership
    • Bring deep expertise in wind energy detailed design, including wind farm layout, electrical systems, grid integration and construction support.
    • Provide technical leadership across renewable energy systems, including wind, solar and storage technologies
    • Support integration of renewable assets into the broader energy system, including transmission, distribution and energy storage.
    • Establish and uphold technical quality, assurance and design excellence across all projects.
  • People & Capability Development
    • Support growth of renewable energy capability in Canada across multiple technologies.
    • Identify hiring needs and contribute to recruitment and team building.
    • Mentor and develop multidisciplinary teams across power systems, civil and advisory disciplines.

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Canada, or ability to obtain.
  • At least 12 years of experienceย
  • Proven leadership of large-scale, multi-disciplinary energy or infrastructure projects.
  • Broad experience across renewable energy technologies (wind, solar, storage or hybrid systems).
  • Strong track record in delivering detailed design wind energy projects (required).
  • Experience supporting developers, contractors and/or investors across the project lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian renewable energy markets (Ontario, BC, Quebec, Alberta and/or Atlantic Canada).
