What is a rendering artist?

A Rendering Artist is responsible for creating high-quality visual representations of objects, characters, environments, or scenes using computer graphics software. They work in industries like animation, gaming, architecture, and visual effects to produce realistic or stylized images and animations. Their role typically involves texturing, lighting, and shading to enhance the final output. Rendering Artists collaborate with designers, modelers, and developers to bring creative visions to life. Proficiency in software like Blender, Maya, or Unreal Engine is often required.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a rendering artist?

As a Rendering Artist, your daily responsibilities often include collaborating closely with 3D modelers, animators, and art directors to bring visual scenes to life by manipulating lighting, materials, and camera settings in render software. You will frequently adjust textures and shaders, troubleshoot rendering issues, and optimize scenes to achieve the desired visual quality within project deadlines. Reviewing renders for accuracy and participating in feedback sessions are also common parts of the workflow. Depending on the studio or project, you may also help create style guides and maintain consistency across different visual assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rendering artist?

To succeed as a Rendering Artist, you need strong artistic ability, a solid understanding of lighting, shading, and texture, and experience with 3D modeling and rendering, often supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, V-Ray, or Adobe Creative Suite is typically required, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with other creative professionals. Mastery of these abilities ensures high-quality visual output and seamless integration of artwork into broader project pipelines.

What does a rendering artist do?

A rendering artist creates visual representations of 3D models and scenes using software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max. They focus on producing realistic images or animations by applying textures, lighting, and shading techniques, often working closely with designers and developers to visualize concepts accurately.

Job description

Fauna trains its robots in simulation long before they touch the real world, and that only works if what the robot sees in sim is faithful to reality. We're looking for a Simulation & Rendering Engineer to build the engineering behind that: the tooling and pipelines spanning our physics simulation and our photorealistic, real-time rendering that produce the synthetic data our perception and visuomotor policies learn from.
You'll partner with technical artists and scientists, focusing your work on the systems side: making renders reproducible, driving the engine and its assets from automation, and running the pipeline at scale. You will broaden the horizon of what robots experience in simulation by scaling up how it is rendered.
Key job responsibilities
- Work across physics simulation and our real-time rendering systems, building the tooling behind a synthetic data pipeline
- Make rendering deterministic and reproducible through tooling and tests
- Drive rendering engines from automation: scripting layers, asset baking and cooking, and the and content pipeline that lets renders run at scale
- Partner with technical artists to infuse assets into a robust, automated rendering pipeline
- Improve the rendering pipeline to maximize transfer from simulation to the real robot
About the team
Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company, is building capable, safe, and genuinely delightful robots for everyday life. Our goal is simple: make robots people actually want to live and interact with in everyday human spaces.
We believe that future won't arrive until building for robotics becomes far more accessible. Today, too much effort is spent reinventing the fundamentals. We're changing that by developing tightly integrated hardware and software systems that make it faster, safer, and more intuitive to create real-world robotic products.
Our work spans the full stack: mechanical design, control systems, dynamic modeling, and intelligent software. The focus is not just functionality, but experience. We're building robots that feel responsive, expressive, and genuinely useful.
At Fauna, you'll work at the frontier of this space, helping define how robots move, manipulate, and interact with people in natural environments. It's an opportunity to solve hard problems across hardware and software with a team focused on making robotics accessible and joyful to build.
If you care about making robotics real for everyone and building systems that are as delightful as they are capable, we'd like to hear from you.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Bachelor's degree or above in robotics, mechanical/mechatronics engineering, systems engineering or related field
- Hands-on experience with a real-time 3D or game engine (e.g., Unreal Engine or Unity)
- Solid grasp of 3D math: coordinate-frame transforms, quaternions, and camera models
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with real-time rendering and graphics pipelines, including GPU rendering and lighting, and producing image, depth, or segmentation data
- Experience driving a game engine through automation: scripting, asset baking/cooking, and headless build and content pipelines
- Experience with robotics or physics simulation (e.g., Isaac Sim/Isaac Lab, MuJoCo), domain randomization, and sim-to-real transfer
- Experience building deterministic, reproducible systems and the golden-image or trajectory regression tests that protect them
