What does a remote wire harness design engineer do?

A Remote Wire Harness Design Engineer is responsible for designing the layout and specifications of electrical wiring systems, also known as wire harnesses, used in vehicles, machinery, or electronic devices. Working remotely, they use specialized CAD software to create detailed diagrams, ensure compliance with industry standards, and collaborate with engineering teams to integrate the harness into products. Their work helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of complex electrical systems while meeting project requirements and deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote wire harness design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Wire Harness Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, proficiency in schematic creation, and experience with wire harness design principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA, or SolidWorks Electrical, as well as knowledge of industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620, is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills enable effective collaboration across distributed teams. These skills are vital to ensure accurate, safe, and manufacturable wire harness designs that meet project specifications and deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by remote wire harness design engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Wire Harness Design Engineers often face challenges coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams, such as mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers, due to the physical separation inherent in remote work. Clear communication using collaborative design tools and regular virtual meetings can help mitigate misunderstandings and ensure alignment on project requirements. Additionally, managing design revisions and ensuring that all team members are working from the latest schematics requires meticulous documentation and version control. Proactively seeking feedback and maintaining detailed records can significantly improve workflow and project outcomes.

What is the difference between Remote Wire Harness Design Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectRemote Wire Harness Design EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires electrical or mechanical engineering degree, certifications like IPC standardsRequires electrical engineering degree, possibly PE license
Work EnvironmentDesigning wire harnesses for automotive, aerospace, or industrial applications remotely or on-siteDesigning electrical systems and components, often in office or lab settings
Industry UsageCommon in automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing sectorsUsed across various industries including consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial

The Remote Wire Harness Design Engineer focuses specifically on designing and developing wire harnesses for various industries, often working remotely. In contrast, the Electrical Design Engineer has a broader scope, designing electrical systems and components. Both roles require electrical knowledge and certifications, but their focus areas and work environments differ.

Position Summary:

If you're energized by solving complex customer challenges and bringing ideas to life, this role is for you. As an Wire Harness Design Engineer with CVG's Electrical Systems team, you will be the technical bridge between our customers and our engineering and sales organizations, helping transform customer needs into high-quality, manufacturable wire harness solutions for the automotive and commercial vehicle industries. You'll collaborate closely with OEMs and internal teams to guide design decisions, support product development, and ensure programs launch successfully. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical systems knowledge with the ability to communicate clearly, manage multiple priorities, and build trust with customers through proactive problem-solving and follow-through.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Engagement & Technical Support

  • Serve as the primary technical contact for assigned customers, responding to inquiries, analyzing requirements, and providing guidance on wire harness design and manufacturability.
  • Lead customer discovery activities, including requirements clarification, engineering reviews, and project scoping discussions.
  • Support the sales team in pre-award activities by reviewing specifications, preparing technical proposals, and estimating material/design feasibility.

Project & Product Engineering

  • Translate customer requirements into clear internal engineering documentation, drawings, and specifications for wiring harness assemblies.
  • Collaborate with internal design, manufacturing engineering, and quality teams to ensure product solutions are cost-effective, manufacturable, and compliant with customer standards.
  • Support product development cycles, including design validation, prototype builds, engineering change management, pre-production trials, and launch readiness.

Technical Problem Solving

  • Identify risks related to design feasibility, material selection, space constraints, and electrical performance; propose alternatives and mitigations.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to harness design, assembly, installation, durability, and system integration throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Facilitate resolution of customer issues, coordinating cross-functional teams to ensure timely response and closure.

Documentation & Communication

  • Prepare customer and internal presentations, design reviews, and technical summaries.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including change requests, engineering records, customer communications, and issue tracking.
  • Provide internal training or briefings to align commercial, program management, and manufacturing groups on customer design expectations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Recommend design standardization opportunities, material substitutions, and process improvements to enhance quality and reduce cost.
  • Stay current with automotive electrical system standards, industry trends, and emerging component technologies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline; equivalent technical experience considered.
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in application or design engineering discipline.

Preferred Characteristics:

  • Prior experience in wire harness design, packaging, or application engineering for automotive, commercial vehicle, off-highway, or heavy-equipment systems.
  • Familiarity with DFMEA / PFMEA, PPAP processes, APQP, and customer launch activities.
  • Hands-on understanding of harness manufacturing processes, material cost drivers, and assembly best practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret vehicle wiring diagrams, 3D routing paths, and installation environments.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Strong organizational discipline with attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Comfort with domestic travel to customer sites, plant locations, and supplier facilities as needed.
  • Working knowledge of electrical schematics, circuit logic, connectors, terminals, protective coverings, and harness routing principles.
  • Experience interpreting customer specifications, engineering drawings, CAD models, and industry standards (SAE, ISO, OEM-specific).
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering tools (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, AutoCAD Electrical, Zuken E3, Capital Harness, or equivalent).

Salary Range: $80,000 - $110,000 annually
