As an HSD Systems Engineer I, you will be responsible for deploying, upgrading, and maintaining the High-Speed Data (HSD) infrastructure that supports critical Internet services. This role combines day-to-day administration and troubleshooting with project-based work focused on analysis, design, development, and testing of new and existing technologies.
You will manage vendor solutions supporting core platforms such as DNS, DHCP, and DOCSIS provisioning while ensuring compliance with security policies and maintaining high system availability. Success in this role requires advanced Linux (CentOS/RHEL) expertise, strong scripting and automation skills, and a solid understanding of network security best practices.
This position offers the opportunity to directly impact the reliability and performance of HSD platforms by blending operational excellence with innovative engineering solutions.
What you will do to contribute to the company's success
To assist in designing, implement, and maintain systems core network systems such as products and solutions by Incognito, Infoblox and Calix along with other technologies to support and maintain the organization's systems, infrastructure and data to include:
  • Performs implementation of new software as it relates to Engineering technologies and projects.
  • Maintains the lifecycle management environment for all HSD applications; Assists with upgrades to technologies that rely upon backend applications
  • Assists with the creation of Low-Level Design (LLD) documentation for configuration templates, method of procedures, application diagrams, knowledge base articles, bill of materials and support documentation.
  • Conducts training for new technology integration, technology upgrades, new product design, and implementation to relevant Cable One team members.
  • Analyzes project requests to estimate time and cost.
  • Works as part of a project team to determine requirements, risks, and limitations for each project scope.
  • Performs on-call duties, customer equipment escalations, and overnight network changes as assigned.
  • Configure, manage and troubleshoot Linux systems, DOCSIS provisioning, DNS and DHCP configuration, Authentication, Access Policies, and others to ensure optimal network performance, security, and connectivity.
  • Utilize Python, Ansible, or other scripting and programming tools, together with strong Linux administration skills to automate tasks, troubleshoot issues, and optimization.
  • Respond to requests escalated to HSD Systems Engineering Team and Perform on-call duties as assigned, being a technical point of contact for team

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred; and minimum two years related progressive experience in a network engineering role required.
  • Previous working background in an MSO (Multiple System Operators) in the cable industry preferred.

Technical Experience
  • Linux Administration: 4+ years hands-on experience managing CentOS or RHEL environments.
  • Automation & Scripting: Proficiency with Shell, Python, Perl, Docker, and/or Ansible for system automation and orchestration.
  • Network Engineering: 4+ years designing, deploying, and operating high-availability corporate and telecommunications networks.
  • Network Skills: Demonstrated expertise in advanced troubleshooting and in applying industry-standard network-security best practices.

Certificates, licenses, registrations
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
  • Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA)
  • Associate-level networking certification required.
  • Professional-level networking certification preferred.

Other qualifications
  • Must be flexible and able to work on-call outside business hours.
  • Position will require up to 10% travel.
  • Application design and implementation project experience in one or more of the following areas preferred - DHCP, DNS, NTP
  • Experience with the following vendor products preferred: Incognito, Infoblox, Redhat
  • Experience with IPv4, IPv6, DHCP, DNS, Docker, LDAP, and other relevant technologies and/or standards preferred
  • Proficiency in networking essentials.
  • Ability to manage vendor relationships.
  • Ability to troubleshoot escalated issues in relation to applications.
