What is a remote weekend software developer?

A Remote Weekend Software Developer is a professional who works on software development tasks remotely, typically during weekends. This role is ideal for companies that require ongoing development support outside regular business hours or for individuals seeking flexible, part-time work. Responsibilities often include coding, debugging, and collaborating with teams via online platforms. Developers in this position must possess strong technical skills, good time management, and the ability to communicate effectively in remote settings. The flexibility of remote and weekend work makes this job appealing to those balancing other commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote weekend software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Weekend Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in relevant languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), experience with software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and remote collaboration tools (such as Slack or Jira) is important. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear written communication are critical soft skills for independent and asynchronous work. These skills and qualities ensure consistent productivity, seamless teamwork, and high-quality software delivery while working remotely and during non-traditional hours.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote weekend software developers and how can they be overcome?

Remote Weekend Software Developers often navigate challenges such as managing communication with teammates who may work traditional hours and maintaining work-life balance during non-standard shifts. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to establish clear expectations with your team regarding availability, utilize asynchronous communication tools effectively, and plan dedicated downtime to avoid burnout. Many teams have adopted collaborative platforms and detailed documentation practices to ensure continuity and smooth handovers between weekday and weekend developers.

Software Developer (Applied AI)

You will be working on a 100% remote schedule as part of Fidelity's dynamic working arrangement.

Current work authorization for Canada is required for all openings.

At Fidelity, we've been helping Canadian investors build better financial futures for over 35 years. We offer individuals and institutions a range of trusted investment portfolios and services - and we're constantly seeking to find new and better ways to help our clients. As a privately owned company, we boldly embrace innovation in all areas as we continue to grow our business into the future.

You'll have a wide range of opportunities to grow and develop your career in an inclusive environment where you'll feel valued and supported to be your best - both personally and professionally.

What You Will Do

The Software Developer, Applied AI reports to the Manager, Applied AI and is responsible for designing, building, testing and deploying practical, secure and governed AI solutions for Fidelity Investments Canada. The role has a strong focus on generative AI, agentic AI and modern software engineering, while contributing to reusable Applied AI foundations that can be scaled across multiple business use cases.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who is passionate about emerging technology and enjoys turning rapidly evolving AI capabilities into practical, production-ready solutions. The successful candidate will work directly with business and technology partners to understand problems and opportunities, translate them into AI use cases, rapidly experiment with potential solutions and mature successful prototypes into reliable enterprise applications.

The role will also work closely with the Manager, Applied AI, Fidelity International, Architecture, Security and AI Governance to ensure solutions are scalable, observable, secure and governed, while maintaining flexibility across models, technology platforms and vendors.

What You Will Do

  • Partner directly with business, product and technology teams to understand business problems and translate them into well-defined AI use cases and technical requirements; build rapid prototypes and proofs of concept and develop successful ideas into production-quality AI and agentic applications, APIs and services.
  • Build and extend Applied AI foundations, including reusable patterns for model access, RAG and enterprise knowledge, agent orchestration, tool use, evaluation, observability and deployment. Develop cloud-native components using technologies such as AWS, Snowflake and Kubernetes.
  • Design modular and portable AI components that preserve strategic flexibility across models, frameworks and vendors, and collaborate with Fidelity International and Architecture teams to reuse and extend enterprise capabilities where appropriate.
  • Apply modern agentic engineering practices, including prompt and context engineering, LLMs, APIs, tools, memory, RAG, workflow orchestration, evaluations, guardrails and observability.
  • Build AI solutions with security and governance embedded from the beginning, working closely with AI Governance, Security, Privacy, Risk and Architecture on data access, model and tool usage, human oversight, traceability, monitoring and other required controls.
  • Continuously evaluate emerging foundation models, agent frameworks and AI engineering techniques through hands-on experimentation. Assess technologies based on capability, security, governance, interoperability, performance, cost and operational complexity, and turn promising approaches into reusable production patterns.
  • Apply strong software engineering practices across AI applications, including automated testing, CI/CD, security and quality gates, resilient design, error handling, monitoring, logging, fallbacks and cost management.
  • Support production AI services through observability, root-cause analysis and continuous improvement, monitoring application health as well as model and agent quality, latency, errors and cost.
  • Contribute to a strong Applied AI engineering culture through design and code reviews, technical discussions, documentation, reusable examples, knowledge sharing and collaboration across business, data, architecture, security, governance and international teams.

The Expertise You Bring

  • Strong expertise with advanced Python skills for developing and supporting production-grade APIs, services, and applications.
  • Experience building and deploying scalable cloud-native solutions using AWS, Snowflake, and Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency in API development, microservices architecture, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and automated testing.
  • Knowledge of Java and/or JavaScript is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Agentic AI Engineering principles and practices.
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), agent orchestration, tool integration, and prompt/context engineering.
  • Experience with AI evaluation, observability, monitoring, performance optimization, and cost management.
  • Familiarity with MLOps/LLMOps, including model and agent lifecycle management and evaluation frameworks.
  • Knowledge of AI security, privacy, responsible AI, and governance-by-design principles.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, analytical problem-solving, and continuous learning capabilities, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and business teams.

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Economics or Mathematics or equivalent working experience
  • 2+ years of experience in software development, preferably in the financial services/mutual fund/investment industry
  • Candidates should have demonstrated hands-on experience delivering production software solutions, with practical experience in AI/ML, generative AI or agentic applications strongly preferred.
  • AWS certification or equivalent hands-on cloud experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working within Agile or Scrum environments is an asset.
