Remote Web Accessibility information

What is a remote web accessibility specialist?

A remote web accessibility specialist is a professional who works from a remote location to ensure websites and digital content are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. They evaluate websites for compliance with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), suggest improvements, and may assist in implementing accessible design and code. Their work helps organizations make their digital content usable for people with visual, auditory, cognitive, or motor impairments, improving both usability and legal compliance.

How does a remote web accessibility specialist typically collaborate with developers and designers to ensure accessible digital products?

As a remote web accessibility specialist, you'll often work closely with developers and designers through virtual meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation. Your role involves providing actionable feedback on design wireframes and code to ensure compliance with accessibility standards like WCAG. Effective communication and the use of collaboration tools (such as Slack, Jira, or GitHub) are essential to bridge gaps and integrate accessibility best practices throughout the development lifecycle. Regularly hosting training sessions and creating clear accessibility guidelines also help foster a more inclusive team culture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote web accessibility specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Web Accessibility Specialist, you need a solid understanding of web accessibility standards (such as WCAG), web development fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and experience with accessibility audits. Familiarity with tools like screen readers (JAWS, NVDA), automated testing platforms (axe, WAVE), and relevant certifications (such as IAAP CPACC) is highly beneficial. Strong communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail are vital soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and effectively identifying accessibility barriers. These competencies are crucial to ensure digital content is inclusive, legally compliant, and usable by people of all abilities.
