Remote Water Design Engineer information

What is a remote water design engineer?

A Remote Water Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing water supply, treatment, and distribution systems while working outside of a traditional office environment. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and other engineering tools to create plans and specifications for water infrastructure projects, collaborating with teams and clients virtually. Their responsibilities may include hydraulic modeling, sustainability analysis, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Remote Water Design Engineers play a crucial role in supporting communities by providing safe and reliable water systems, often working for engineering firms, government agencies, or consulting companies. They must possess strong technical, communication, and project management skills to succeed in a remote setting.

How does a remote water design engineer typically collaborate with clients and team members while working offsite?

Remote Water Design Engineers frequently use digital collaboration tools to communicate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. Regular video conferences, online project management platforms, and shared design software (like AutoCAD or Civil 3D) help facilitate real-time feedback and coordination. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential, as remote engineers often need to clarify design intent and address site-specific challenges without being physically present. This setup encourages a structured workflow, but it also requires strong self-management and adaptability to different communication styles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote water design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Water Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or environmental engineering, water systems design, and a relevant engineering degree with licensure (e.g., PE or EIT). Proficiency in CAD software, hydraulic modeling tools (such as EPANET or WaterCAD), and familiarity with remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are crucial for effective teamwork and project delivery in a remote setting. These competencies ensure that water infrastructure projects are designed efficiently, meet regulatory standards, and are successfully executed despite geographical distance.

What is the difference between Remote Water Design Engineer vs Water Systems Designer?

AspectRemote Water Design EngineerWater Systems Designer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil/Environmental Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentRemote or hybrid, collaborating with teams and clientsOffice-based or site visits, sometimes remote
Industry UsageEngineering firms, consulting companies, municipalitiesDesign firms, municipal agencies, consulting companies
Common Search IntentDesigning water systems remotely, engineering rolesCreating water system layouts, project design

The Remote Water Design Engineer and Water Systems Designer roles share similar credentials and industry usage, but the engineer typically works remotely with a focus on engineering principles, while the designer may work more on drafting and layout in an office or on-site setting. Both roles are essential in water infrastructure projects, with the remote engineer often overseeing design quality and compliance.

  • Participate in Change Advisory Board reviews and ensure operational readiness for planned changes.

  • Support commissioning, startup, and deployment of new equipment across local and regional campuses.

  • Review mechanical and electrical design documents and provide operational feedback to engineering, construction, and vendors.

  • Drive improvements to maintenance strategies, automation efforts, and operational processes.

  • Lead technical working sessions to resolve recurring facilities challenges.

  • Review and approve procedures for maintenance activities, safety programs, and OSHA compliance.

  • Develop infrastructure performance metrics and provide reporting to leadership.

  • Mentor technicians and engineers to strengthen technical capability within DCO.

  • Deliver technical training related to arc flash safety, power systems, mechanical systems, and control sequences.

  • Support compliance audits and certification activities.

  • Travel as required to support multi-campus initiatives.

What Were Looking For
  • Recognized technical authority in mission-critical facilities infrastructure.

  • Strong judgment during high-impact operational events.

  • Ability to translate technical findings into operational improvements.

  • Clear communication across technicians, engineers, vendors, and leadership.

  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and disciplined execution.

What Youll Bring
  • 8 or more years of experience in facilities, electrical, or mechanical systems within data center or comparable mission-critical environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems including generators, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, ATS or STS units, PDUs, chillers, cooling towers, pumping systems, and fire suppression systems.

  • Provide technical leadership for all hydronic infrastructure, including chilled water plants, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, piping distribution networks, and water treatment systems, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and operational resilience.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance, condition assessments, and lifecycle management of hydronic and water treatment assets, leveraging data-driven analysis to improve system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements related to water management programs while driving continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Switch operational standards.

  • Strong understanding of control systems and sequences of operation.

  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and electrical drawings.

  • Experience supporting commissioning, design review, and infrastructure deployment.

  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional relevant certifications preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
