What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Water Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Water Design Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or environmental engineering, water systems design, and a relevant engineering degree with licensure (e.g., PE or EIT). Proficiency in CAD software, hydraulic modeling tools (such as EPANET or WaterCAD), and familiarity with remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills are crucial for effective teamwork and project delivery in a remote setting. These competencies ensure that water infrastructure projects are designed efficiently, meet regulatory standards, and are successfully executed despite geographical distance.

How does a Remote Water Design Engineer typically collaborate with clients and team members while working offsite?

Remote Water Design Engineers frequently use digital collaboration tools to communicate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams. Regular video conferences, online project management platforms, and shared design software (like AutoCAD or Civil 3D) help facilitate real-time feedback and coordination. Clear documentation and proactive communication are essential, as remote engineers often need to clarify design intent and address site-specific challenges without being physically present. This setup encourages a structured workflow, but it also requires strong self-management and adaptability to different communication styles.

What is a Remote Water Design Engineer?

A Remote Water Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing water supply, treatment, and distribution systems while working outside of a traditional office environment. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and other engineering tools to create plans and specifications for water infrastructure projects, collaborating with teams and clients virtually. Their responsibilities may include hydraulic modeling, sustainability analysis, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Remote Water Design Engineers play a crucial role in supporting communities by providing safe and reliable water systems, often working for engineering firms, government agencies, or consulting companies. They must possess strong technical, communication, and project management skills to succeed in a remote setting.

What is the difference between Remote Water Design Engineer vs Water Systems Designer?

About Us:

Our Client is a pioneering force in the restoration of the Everglades and a key contributor to various Department of Transportation (DOT) projects throughout Florida. Our commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative engineering solutions drives us to tackle some of the most challenging water resource projects in the state. Join us in our mission to make a lasting impact on Florida's natural landscapes and infrastructure.

Job Description:

As a Water Resource Design Engineer, you will play a critical role in the design and implementation of projects focused on the restoration of the Everglades, specifically canal, levy systems, and other flow projects critical to the ecosystem's health. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to significant environmental restoration efforts and state infrastructure projects, ensuring a sustainable future for the region.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the design of canal, levee systems, and other water flow projects related to Everglade restoration and DOT projects.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, GIS, and other hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software to develop models, interpret results, and design solutions.
  • Prepare mitigation, stormwater, grading, and construction plans, designing and sizing various Best Management Practices (BMPs) according to jurisdictional standards.
  • Provide technical input into the land acquisition process, conduct initial feasibility site visits, and review mitigation design plans.
  • Develop technical specifications and direct construction personnel in the field.
  • Conduct data site visits, site recon/assessment, and construction oversight with occasional travel required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering with a focus on water resources or environmental engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in stormwater management, floodplain management, and/or stream and wetland design.
  • Construction oversight experience for natural resource projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/AutoCAD Civil 3D, TR-20/55, HEC-RAS/HMS, XPSWMM, and GIS.
  • Advanced knowledge of watershed hydrology, stream geomorphology, and related fields.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex design approaches to varied audiences.
  • PE License in Florida or the ability to obtain a PE in Florida.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with canal, levy systems, and projects related to Everglade restoration.
  • Experience preparing floodplain analyses, hydraulic and hydrology investigations, and related studies.

What We Offer:

  • The opportunity to contribute to significant environmental restoration and infrastructure projects.
  • A supportive and collaborative work environment.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Remote work flexibility with a requirement to be based in Florida or willingness to relocate.
