What is a remote W2?

A Remote W2 job is a position where you work remotely as a W-2 employee of a company. As a W-2 employee, your employer withholds taxes, provides benefits if offered, and follows labor laws. Unlike independent contractors, W-2 employees typically receive health insurance, paid time off, and other benefits. This setup provides more job security and employer support compared to 1099 contract work.

How does being a W2 employee impact my work structure when working remotely?

As a Remote W2 employee, you are legally considered an employee of the company rather than an independent contractor, which means you'll typically have set hours, receive company benefits (if offered), and have taxes withheld from your paycheck. Your work structure will likely involve clear expectations, regular check-ins, and access to company resources and training for your professional development. You'll collaborate virtually with your team using communication and project management tools, ensuring you're integrated into the company's workflow and culture. This arrangement provides additional stability and support compared to freelance or 1099 roles while still offering the flexibility of remote work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote W2 position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Remote W2 role, professionals need strong self-motivation, excellent communication skills, and solid experience in their specific job function, such as customer service, IT, or accounting. Familiarity with remote collaboration tools like Zoom, Slack, and cloud-based software relevant to the field is typically required, along with basic understanding of payroll and tax documentation for W2 employees. Time management, adaptability, and independent problem-solving are essential soft skills for those working remotely. These abilities are vital for maintaining productivity, ensuring compliance, and fostering effective teamwork in a virtual environment.

Job description

About Us
We're building a nationwide network of crowdsourced commercial real estate databases. Our wild start-up days are behind us - we're all grown up and profitable now with a 14-year track record and tens of thousands of clients that love us.
Within our small team, you'll be doing a little bit of everything:
  • Building and maintaining server-side frameworks and APIs
  • Adding and refining front-end features (JSP, JavaScript, JQuery, HTML5)
  • If you're into it, configuring and managing parts of our stack (JBoss/Wildfly, MySQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch/ELK, salt)

We're not dogmatic about our tools/technologies - we use whatever best suits the task at hand.
About You
Like us, you value stability, work/life balance, group decisions, and working with people that are good-natured, interesting, hard-working, and self-motivated.
You're a quick study, have some experience using Java to build web applications, and aren't afraid of the command line.
Catylist is for you if...
  • You hate the corporate bureaucracy of a big company.
  • You're so over the chaos and uncertainty of a start-up. You like having reasonable hours and knowing that your job will be around next week.
  • Consulting/freelance is not your bag. You prefer to maintain and improve the products you've built rather than hand them off and move on.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, remote, W2 position with benefits (health/dental/vision/401k).
When applying, please take some time and explain why you're a fit for our team, and please include your resume, github link, and anything else that will help us understand how awesome you are.
