Remote Volunteer information

What is a remote volunteer?

A Remote Volunteer job is a position where individuals contribute their time and skills to a cause or organization from a remote location, using the internet and digital tools. Tasks may include online tutoring, graphic design, content writing, fundraising, or administrative work. This allows volunteers to support organizations without being physically present, making it a flexible and accessible way to give back.

What does a remote volunteer do?

As a Remote Volunteer, your daily tasks can vary depending on the organization and project but often involve checking in with your team using online tools, completing assigned tasks independently, and communicating progress in virtual meetings or through email. Assignments are typically distributed by volunteer coordinators or team leads via project management systems, and clear expectations are outlined at the start of each assignment. Some roles involve individual responsibilities, while others may require collaboration with other remote volunteers. You can expect a flexible schedule but should be prepared to meet deadlines and stay actively engaged with your team. Open communication is key to staying connected and ensuring your volunteer contributions make a positive impact.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote volunteer?

Thriving as a Remote Volunteer requires strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently, along with experience or interest in the relevant cause or field. Familiarity with digital communication platforms such as Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, and project management tools is often necessary. Excellent written communication, time management, and a proactive attitude set standout volunteers apart. These skills enable successful remote collaboration, dependable project completion, and meaningful contributions despite physical distance.

Join the Movement
WeVote's partner VoteUSA has an open volunteering position for a Communications Manager (~5 hours per week) who wants to use their existing skills, grow new ones, and help strengthen American democracy.
About VoteUSA
Vote-USA.org informs and educates voters by producing comprehensive, nonpartisan election information for national, state, and many local elections. Founded in 2003 by Ron Kahlow, VoteUSA has researched 20,000+ candidates and 500+ issues, helping voters understand who and what they are voting for. The organization continues to close the voter-information gap through accessible, factual election data.
About WeVote
A longtime partner of VoteUSA, WeVote is a nonpartisan, volunteer-powered civic-tech nonprofit and a Fast Forward nonprofit technology grantee. With 150+ active volunteers, WeVote builds open-source mobile tools that help voters make informed decisions in about eight minutes - including downloading the WeVote Ballot Guide app. Learn more at https://WeVote.US or @WeVote. We are a 100% remote organization.
What You'll Do
As Communications Manager, you will lead VoteUSA's communications operations, manage a small team, and oversee nationwide outreach campaigns.
  • Team Leadership - Manage VoteUSA's Communications Team and coordinate with WeVote leadership.
  • Email Campaign Oversight - Oversee regular email campaigns to candidates, election officials, and voters (candidate outreach, election official verification, voter education/GOTV, volunteer communications).
  • Communications Calendar - Develop a communications calendar and metrics to assess campaign effectiveness (engagement, response rates, etc.).
  • Workflow Improvement - Build communication processes, improve workflows, and document best practices for consistency and efficiency.
  • Agile Team Management - Run weekly agile meetings, mentor volunteers, and onboard new team members.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration - Work with Political Data and Business Development teams to ensure outreach is based on accurate election information.
  • Task Assignment - Match volunteers with tasks suited to their skill levels; review work products and propose efficiency improvements.
  • OKR Management - Support and track team OKRs, train volunteers unfamiliar with OKRs, follow up on deadlines, adjust schedules, and communicate changes.
  • Reporting - Provide brief reports in meetings, via email, and in team newsletters on project status.
  • Documentation - Keep communication documentation accurate and current.
Who You Are: Must-Haves
  • Weekly Availability - Able to volunteer at least 3-4 hours per week during WeVote's core hours (M-F, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. PT).
  • Commitment to Democracy - You want to work with an established, successful team and are committed to strengthening American democracy.
  • Personal Excellence - You strive for high-quality work and continuous improvement.
  • Collaboration - Willingness to work with and support other volunteers.
  • U.S. Location - Must be located in the U.S. with 1-2 hours per week overlapping with Pacific Time.
Nice to Have (Not Required)
  • Additional Volunteering - If you have more than 5 hours per week, opportunities exist to contribute more broadly within WeVote.
  • Communications Background - Experience in communications, PR, nonprofit outreach, marketing, journalism, or strong written communication skills.
What You'll Gain
You will help shape nationwide voter-information outreach and contribute to a movement that will receive national attention. You'll gain experience leading a remote communications team, managing large-scale outreach campaigns, and developing nonprofit communications strategies. You'll also expand your professional network, grow leadership skills, and contribute to tools that empower millions of voters across the United States.
