What are remote telescopes?

Remote telescopes are astronomical instruments that can be accessed and operated over the internet, allowing users to observe celestial objects from anywhere in the world. These telescopes are located in strategic locations with optimal viewing conditions and are controlled through specialized software interfaces. Remote telescopes are used by professional astronomers, researchers, and amateur enthusiasts alike to capture images, conduct research, or simply explore the night sky without needing to be physically present at the observatory.

What is the difference between Remote Telescope vs Remote Observatory Technician?

AspectRemote TelescopeRemote Observatory Technician
Required CredentialsDegree in Astronomy, Physics, or related field; technical skills in telescope operationTechnical diploma or degree; experience with observatory equipment and maintenance
Work EnvironmentRemote operation of telescopes, often from home or office; requires internet connectivityRemote or on-site maintenance and troubleshooting of observatory systems
Industry UsageAstronomy research, astrophotography, educational projectsObservatory management, equipment maintenance, system calibration

Remote Telescope roles focus on operating telescopes remotely for research or imaging, while Remote Observatory Technicians handle maintenance and technical support of observatory equipment. Both require technical skills and often work remotely, but their core responsibilities differ in operation versus maintenance.

What are some common challenges faced by operators of remote telescopes, and how can they be addressed?

Operators of remote telescopes often encounter challenges such as communication delays, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions from afar, and managing time zone differences with on-site teams. Addressing these issues requires strong technical troubleshooting skills, clear documentation of procedures, and effective communication tools for collaboration. Additionally, proactive maintenance schedules and real-time monitoring software can help minimize downtime and ensure smooth operations. Building strong relationships with local facility staff is also key to resolving urgent issues efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Telescope Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Telescope Operator, you need a background in astronomy or physics, technical proficiency in telescope operations, and familiarity with data analysis, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Experience with telescope control software, CCD imaging systems, and remote observation platforms is highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating observations and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure accurate data collection and efficient operation of complex astronomical equipment, enabling valuable scientific discoveries.

About Engine
At Engine, we're transforming business travel into something personalized, rewarding, and simple. For too long, managing travel and spend has been overwhelming and fragmented - we're here to change that. We believe the future of travel should be seamless and powered by technology that delights customers at every step. That's why we're building a platform that brings together corporate travel, a powerful charge card, and modern spend management in one place.
To make this vision real, we're looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel.
More than 30,000 companies already rely on Engine to support over 1 million travelers and billions in annual bookings each year. Cash flow positive with rapid growth, we pair exclusive Engine-only rates, industry-leading rewards, and intelligent automation to help businesses save money while delivering world-class personalization and convenience.
Backed by Telescope Partners, Blackstone, and Permira, Engine has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing travel and fintech platforms in North America, with honors including the Deloitte Fast 500 and Built In's Best Places to Work.
The Opportunity
This is a rare seat at the table. As Chief of Staff to the Chief Business Officer, you'll be the strategic partner and proxy at the center of a high-growth, multi-product company, shaping commercial strategy, driving cross-functional alignment, and turning the CBO's priorities into results. We're scaling past 1,000 employees at 60%+ YoY growth, and this is the role that makes sure we do it with rigor.
What You'll Do
  • Drive Commercial Priorities: Partner with the CBO to define and execute the company's partnership and supply strategy, leading special projects that bridge departments, from RevOps to Finance, with precision on complex deal structuring and economics.
  • Build the Cross-Functional Bridge: Navigate new and growing teams to pinpoint where finance, legal, or product support is needed to accelerate deal velocity and operational efficiency.
  • Be the Flywheel of Accountability: Serve as the hub between the CBO and his leadership team, keeping strategic decisions cascading cleanly through the organization, closing communication gaps, and holding teams to their commitments as we scale. Drive weekly leadership meetings, monthly business reviews and quarterly OKRs across the CBO's organization.
  • Prep the CBO for High-Stakes Moments: Build sharp, data-backed materials for Board meetings, investor updates, and partner reviews, and run deep-dives into our commercial architecture to deliver recommendations that shape strategy. Have a front row seat to the strategy and execution of future fundraising milestones.
  • Extend the CBO's Reach: Act as a trusted proxy in rooms where the CBO is at capacity, advance priorities independently, and own the research and prep that powers ELT meetings.
Who You Are
  • The Archetype: A blend of operator, strategist, and proxy who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-product environment where rigor matters as much as speed.
  • Experienced Executor: 8+ years of experience across high-growth tech, strategy consulting, or fast-paced commercial operations. Fintech, Travel-tech, or B2B SaaS background is a plus.
  • High EQ, Low Ego: The emotional intelligence to manage diverse stakeholders and the humility to put the company's success first.
  • Master Communicator: You turn complex commercial and legal concepts into compelling narratives. You are equally at home in the weeds of project tracking, dashboards, and quota configuration or zoomed out on high-level strategy.

Compensation
Our compensation packages are based on several factors, including your experience, expertise, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, total compensation may include equity and/or variable pay (OTE). Your recruiter will share your complete compensation package as you move through the process.
Base Pay Range
$190,000-$230,000 USD
