Optum is seeking a Portal Application Architect - Remote to define and govern the application architecture for a cloud native program. This role establishes architectural standards, ensures consistency across teams, and guides secure, scalable, and maintainable portal patterns aligned with overall program objectives.

You'llenjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

 

Primary Responsibilities:  

  • Define end-to-end portal application architecture including UI frameworks, service/API integration patterns, authentication/authorization, and deployment models
  • Define and govern non-functional architecture standards (performance, resiliency, scalability, security, compliance, observability, and operational readiness)
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise identity patterns including SSO, RBAC, and Entra ID integration, and align API exposure with enterprise standards
  • Drive architectural decisions for platform-aligned delivery (e.g., Kubernetes-based runtime, ingress/egress controls, API management, and monitoring/telemetry patterns)
  • Review and approve design artifacts and technical approaches; provide design authority for complex portal and integration decisions
  • Partner with Development Leads to guide implementation and resolve complex technical challenges and cross-team dependencies
  • Collaborate with DevSecOps and shared services teams to ensure architectural alignment with automated build/deploy controls and security guardrails
  • Influence the long-term roadmap for portal and digital engagement capabilities in support of portal modernization outcomes

Required Qualifications: 

  • 8 years of experience serving as a Cloud subject matter expert on Cloud, Application Architecture, and many other Technologies
  • 8 years of application architecture experience with solid focus on portal and web-based systems
  • 7 years of proven experience designing API-driven, cloud-native applications and service integration patterns
  • Deep experience in developing vision and leading complex and high visibility projects
  • Proven solid understanding of application security, identity, and access control in enterprise environments
  • Experience working closely with development teams to balance architectural rigor with delivery execution
  • Proven solid documentation skills and experience operating within architecture governance processes

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 10 years of digital transformation experience with broad business areas / LOBs
  • Experience with Azure application platforms such as AKS, API Management, Application Gateway/WAF, and Azure-native monitoring integrations
  • Deep experience in areas adjacent to cloud like data engineering, AI, process improvement, etc.
  • Familiarity with sales process and opportunity tracking and management
  • Familiar with latest trends in Cloud and their relevance / use in healthcare 
  • Broad understanding of Cloud based security solutions and familiar with Healthcare specific regulatory specifications like HIPPA, PHI, PII
  • Ability to prepare POV's and other Client facing assets
