Job description

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a process engineer to join our team. In this hybrid/remote role, you will support multidisciplinary project teams within our process engineering practice group on mineral and chemical processing projects. Your work will involve process design and analysis for base and precious metals, industrial minerals, evaporites, coal, chemicals, and fuels.

You will contribute to developing process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams, performing mass and energy balance modeling, supporting laboratory and pilot plant testing, and preparing technical reports and specifications. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality engineering solutions that support project success and client outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a strong analytical thinker who is detail-oriented and collaborative, with a proactive approach to problem-solving. They are adaptable, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, and are motivated to support both technical excellence and client service.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Process design and analysis: perform process calculations, develop mass and energy balances, and support process modeling to inform engineering design decisions.

  • Process documentation: develop process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to clearly communicate design intent.

  • Technical reporting and specifications: prepare technical reports, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation to support project deliverables.

  • Cost estimating and equipment sizing: assist with capital and operating cost estimates and size process equipment and piping systems.

  • Laboratory and pilot testing support: participate in testing programs to validate process designs and optimize performance.

  • Fieldwork and project support: support project implementation through occasional travel, site visits, and hands-on fieldwork as needed.

  • Hybrid:a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Calgary office.

  • Remote:a remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A remote arrangement refers to working primarily from a home office. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, local regulations, and Barr's needs.

  • Travel requirement: periodic travel and short-term field assignments will be required to support project work.

  • Work environment: ability to work in environments that may include rough terrain typical of construction sites or industrial facilities, including work around equipment and on elevated structures. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, metallurgy, mineral processing, materials science, or a related discipline with relevant coursework.

  • Experience: 5 years of related experience.

  • Driver's license: valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship or have the ability to obtain a TN visa.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Master's degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering.

  • Experience working at industrial or operating sites or as a consulting engineer.

  • Process simulation experience like Promax or Aspen Hysys.

  • Professional Engineering license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Compensation: anticipated range of $100,000-$120,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
