What is a Remote System Safety Engineer?

A Remote System Safety Engineer is a professional responsible for analyzing, assessing, and mitigating safety risks associated with complex systems, such as those used in aerospace, automotive, or industrial applications, while working remotely. Their duties typically include conducting hazard analyses, developing safety cases, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams online. By working remotely, they leverage digital tools and communication platforms to perform safety assessments, document findings, and support project teams from various locations. This role is critical in ensuring that systems are designed and maintained to operate safely, even as teams work from different geographical areas.

The Remote System Safety Engineer primarily focuses on ensuring safety standards and risk mitigation in complex systems, often working within regulated industries. In contrast, the Remote Systems Engineer concentrates on designing and maintaining system functionalities. While both roles require technical expertise, their core responsibilities and certifications differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote System Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote System Safety Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, risk assessment, and safety standards, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (such as FMEA, FTA), safety-critical software, and certifications like CISSP or relevant safety engineering credentials is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective remote communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the reliable identification and mitigation of safety risks in complex systems, especially when collaborating remotely across teams.

How does a Remote System Safety Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system safety standards are met?

As a Remote System Safety Engineer, you'll regularly coordinate with design, hardware, software, and quality assurance teams—often through virtual meetings and collaborative platforms. You'll review design documents, participate in risk assessments, and provide safety recommendations to ensure compliance with industry standards. Effective communication and documentation are key, as you'll need to relay safety requirements and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Despite working remotely, you'll be an integral part of the team, contributing to project milestones and audits.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
ModernControls is a leading provider of HVAC and building automation services for commercial facilities across Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. With over 200 employees and a fleet of 160 service vehicles, our team installs, maintains, and designs Building Automation and HVAC systems that help facility managers optimize building performance and control operating costs.
The Remote Monitoring Center (RMC) Specialist is responsible for the centralized monitoring, analysis, and support of Building Automation Systems (BAS) across multiple facilities. This role focuses on real-time alarm management, system optimization, and remote programming support using platforms from leading manufacturers such as Johnson Controls and Distech Controls. The ideal candidate will proactively identify system issues, implement programming changes, and contribute to the continuous growth and improvement of the remote monitoring department.
In this role, the RMC Specialist monitors BAS alarms and alerts in real time across multiple client sites, triaging and prioritizing them based on severity, impact, and system criticality. The position requires performing initial diagnostics to determine root causes of system issues, escalating critical alarms to field technicians or facility managers when necessary, and maintaining accurate alarm logs, incident reports, and resolution documentation. The specialist is also responsible for performing remote programming changes, system updates, and tuning across BAS platforms, including modifying control sequences, setpoints, schedules, and logic to optimize overall system performance. Additionally, the role supports commissioning activities by validating system functionality remotely and troubleshooting integration issues between HVAC, lighting, and other building systems.
A key component of the position involves system optimization and analytics, including analyzing system trends, energy usage, and performance data to identify opportunities for energy savings and operational improvements. The RMC Specialist implements continuous commissioning strategies to enhance efficiency and generates performance reports and dashboards for both internal teams and clients. The role also serves as a technical resource, providing remote assistance and guidance to clients, field technicians, and project teams, while clearly communicating system status updates and recommendations.
As part of a growing Remote Monitoring Center, the specialist contributes to the development of standard operating procedures, process improvements, and monitoring strategies. This includes supporting the onboarding and training of new team members and participating in the expansion of service offerings and the overall scaling of the monitoring center.
