Job description

The Role in One Sentence

You’re the engineer who makes the systems that run our broadband business talk to each other — and then run themselves.

What You’ll Actually Do

When a customer signs up for broadband, VoIP, or IPTV, a chain of systems has to fire in order: the CRM captures the order, the product catalog prices it, provisioning turns the service on, and billing starts the clock — all without anyone keying data in twice or chasing down why an account didn’t activate. Your job is to design, connect, and automate that chain, and to keep it reliable as we grow.

This is fundamentally an integration and automation role, not a single-platform admin job. You’ll live across our core CRM, billing, and provisioning platforms, but the value you create is in the connective tissue between them. If you like turning manual, error-prone handoffs into clean automated workflows — and you’re comfortable moving between a CRM config screen, a Python script, and an API spec in the same afternoon — this is built for you.

Title: BSS Systems Engineer

Location: Remote

Rate: $85,000-$115,000 annually

Full-Time/Part Time: Full-Time

Reporting to: Director of BSS

What a Typical Week Looks Like

No two weeks are identical, but roughly:

  • ~40% — Integration & automation. Building and maintaining the connections between systems (APIs, webhooks, middleware, scripts) and automating provisioning, activation, and billing workflows.
  • ~25% — Platform configuration. Configuring and tuning BSS platforms: CRM, billing, product catalog, provisioning, service activation, inventory, and workflow tools.
  • ~20% — Reliability & data integrity. Troubleshooting system-level issues end to end, keeping data in sync across CRM, network management, and billing, and coordinating with vendors when needed.
  • ~15% — Collaboration & projects. Working with other teams on workflow design, release planning, vendor evaluations, UAT, change control, upgrades, and documentation.

Working with AI

We treat modern AI tools as part of how strong engineers work today. You’re encouraged to use AI assistants to accelerate scripting, draft and review integrations, generate documentation, and speed up troubleshooting. What matters to us is sound engineering judgment and reliable systems — not whether a human or a model wrote the first draft.

What You'll Own

The systems

Configure and maintain BSS platforms — CRM, billing, product catalog, provisioning, service activation, inventory, and workflow tools, with the CRM, billing, and provisioning platforms at the center.

The integrations

Connect internal systems and third-party applications using APIs, webhooks, middleware, and scripts. Automate provisioning, activation, and billing workflows for broadband, VoIP, and IPTV. Keep data accurate and synchronized across CRM, network management, and billing platforms.

Reliability

Troubleshoot system-level issues and drive them to resolution, coordinating with vendors as needed. Support reporting and analytics by exposing key system data to BI tools and warehouses. Contribute to cybersecurity compliance and access-control settings.

Collaboration & delivery

Partner with the Sr. Business Process Manager, Finance, Network Engineering, Network Operations, Customer Experience, and Marketing to define and implement business workflows. Contribute to system architecture, release planning, and performance optimization. Take part in vendor evaluations and implementations, UAT, change control, and system upgrades. Keep documentation current — workflows, data models, and change logs.

What you'll Bring

We’re looking for someone who fits the shape of this role more than someone who checks every single box. If you’ve spent real time integrating and automating the systems behind a telecom or ISP and you’re missing one or two items below, we still want to hear from you.

Core

  • 5+ years working with BSS/OSS platforms in a telecom or ISP environment
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise CRM, billing, and BI/analytics platforms
  • Intermediate-to-expert scripting: Python, Bash, SQL, and REST APIs
  • Solid grasp of data flows and ETL
  • Familiarity with broadband/telecom service provisioning systems
  • Working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals: DHCP, RADIUS, DNS
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills
  • Comfortable working across departments and balancing competing priorities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent experience

Even better if you have

  • Experience with network management and monitoring tools
  • Working knowledge of OSS systems and how they interact with BSS
  • Knowledge of network topology and service design (PON, DOCSIS)
  • Experience with container orchestration and modern deployment tooling
  • Familiarity with TM Forum frameworks (eTOM, SID, Open APIs)

Working Conditions

  • Remote, but must reside within driving distance of one of our property locations: Winona, MN; Sergeant Bluff, IA; Maricopa, AZ; Hagerstown, MD; Burlington, VT; or New Knoxville, OH
  • Occasional travel for project implementations or vendor meetings
  • Participation in scheduled maintenance windows and incident-response support
  • Participation in cross-functional projects and change-control boards
