Remote Synthetic Biology information

What is a remote synthetic biology scientist?

A Remote Synthetic Biologist is a professional who uses principles of biology, engineering, and computer science to design and construct new biological parts, systems, or devices, often working from a remote location. These specialists typically analyze genetic data, design genetic circuits, and collaborate on biotechnological projects using digital tools. Remote work in this field is enabled by cloud-based lab platforms, bioinformatics software, and virtual collaboration with research teams. This role allows for flexibility and access to global projects, but may require occasional on-site work at partner labs or facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote synthetic biology scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Synthetic Biology Scientist, you need a solid background in molecular biology, genetic engineering, and bioinformatics, often supported by an advanced degree in biology or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), DNA design software (such as Benchling or Geneious), and relevant data analytics tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills help individuals excel in remote, collaborative environments. These competencies are essential for designing, executing, and sharing innovative biological solutions efficiently while working outside traditional laboratory settings.

How do remote synthetic biology professionals typically collaborate with laboratory-based teams?

Remote synthetic biology professionals often work closely with laboratory-based teams through digital collaboration tools, virtual meetings, and shared data platforms. They may be responsible for designing experiments, analyzing data, or developing computational models, which are then implemented or validated by onsite laboratory staff. Regular communication and clear documentation are key to ensuring seamless coordination, and many organizations use project management software to track progress and facilitate feedback. This collaborative structure allows remote team members to contribute significantly to research outcomes while maintaining flexibility in their work environment.

*We welcome more senior candidates to apply for this role.
At Automata, we're on a mission to transform how scientists work by making automation accessible to every lab in the world. We believe that by giving labs the power to automate, we can unlock discoveries that will shape the future of life sciences-from diagnostics and drug discovery to synthetic biology.
But we're more than just a company disrupting the industry-we're a team of innovators, problem-solvers, and creators passionate about empowering scientists. Our LINQ platform combines hardware and software to streamline workflows, making lab automation fast, flexible, and affordable. This means our customers can focus on groundbreaking research, while we take care of the rest.
Why Work at Automata?

  • Growth: We invest in our people. Whether through hands-on experience, professional development, or collaborative projects, you'll grow both professionally and personally.
  • Community: Join a diverse, passionate team that values collaboration (golf on a Thursday, Soccer once a month, movie nights whenever we fancy it).

  • Deliver results by consistently achieving sales targets and quotas while maintaining forecast accuracy
  • Conduct live software demonstrations and product presentations that showcase LINQ's capabilities
  • Provide strategic insight by sharing market feedback, competitive intelligence, and territory performance analysis with leadership
  • Support marketing initiatives through partnering with marketing on territory-specific campaigns and lead generation efforts

  • Strong understanding of automation workflows, lab hardware, or integrated software systems
  • Self-motivated with proven ability to work independently and achieve ambitious goals
  • Experience with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred)
  • Willingness to travel regularly (approximately 40-50%) for customer site visits and national trade shows
What Makes You Stand Out
  • Track record of exceeding quota in complex technical sales
  • Experience selling to both academic research labs and biopharma/diagnostics companies
  • Consultative selling approach with the ability to navigate multiple stakeholders
