Job description

Summary
About the Position: Serves as a Health Technician (Surgical) in a clinic within the Defense Health Agency at Naval Medical Center - Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Help
  • Follow pre-operative nursing care plan in preparing the patient and operating room.
  • Prepare required supplies, equipment, and instruments for surgical procedures.
  • Obtain supplies needed during surgery.
  • Clean operating room after surgery and replenish general supplies.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Health care workers will be offered the Hepatitis B vaccine or immunity testing, and if declined, will be required to sign a Hepatitis B declination form.
  • Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical annually and thereafter.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 3 months of employment.
  • This position may have a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement.
  • Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment Drug Testing and random testing thereafter.

In order to qualify, you must meet the Experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience
: One year of specialized experience which includes: preparing the patient and operating room; handing instruments to the surgeon during the procedure; obtaining supplies needed during surgery. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
