Remote Surface Warfare Officer information

What is a Remote Surface Warfare Officer?

A Remote Surface Warfare Officer is a commissioned officer in the Navy who specializes in the operation and management of surface ships, often utilizing advanced remote systems and technologies. These officers oversee shipboard operations, tactics, navigation, and combat systems, ensuring their vessel's mission success. They may work with remotely piloted or autonomous surface vessels as technology evolves in naval warfare. Their responsibilities include coordinating crew activities, maintaining readiness, and executing maritime strategies. This role requires strong leadership, technical knowledge, and the ability to adapt to new remote technologies.

How does a Remote Surface Warfare Officer typically collaborate with shipboard teams and other remote personnel to ensure mission success?

Remote Surface Warfare Officers often rely on advanced communication platforms to coordinate with shipboard crew members and other remote operators. They participate in regular briefings, provide tactical guidance, and support real-time decision-making, ensuring seamless integration between remote and on-site operations. Building strong relationships and maintaining clear communication channels are essential for addressing challenges such as time zone differences and the lack of face-to-face interaction. This collaborative approach is crucial for maintaining operational readiness and executing missions effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Surface Warfare Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Surface Warfare Officer, you need a solid understanding of naval operations, maritime tactics, and leadership principles, typically supported by a commission as a Naval Officer and completion of Surface Warfare qualification. Familiarity with shipboard combat systems, radar and navigation technology, and secure communications platforms is essential. Strong decision-making, adaptability, and clear communication skills are vital for coordinating missions and leading teams in dynamic environments. These competencies ensure effective mission execution, crew safety, and operational readiness, especially when managing operations remotely.

Peraton is seeking an enthusiastic and talented senior DevSecOps engineer to build on ongoing modernization efforts for the US Navy with enabling microservices to be rapidly built, tested, fielded, and integrated to container orchestration platforms through heavy use of automation tools and processes. This hybrid support role (75% remote, 25% onsite at a government facility) in the San Diego area is for folks who like being close to the work-building pipelines, automating infrastructure, fixing what slows teams down, and adapting when a program needs something different.

Mission planners need to collaborate in order plan for anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, ballistic missile defense, autonomous drone swarm information gain, and a wide range of other mission areas.

What you'll do:

  • Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines teams rely on
  • Automate infrastructure so environments are predictable and supportable
  • Support containerized platforms in secure, regulated environments
  • Work directly with software and cyber engineers to solve delivery problems
  • Adjust to different program needs, priorities, and technical stacks
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years' experience with BS/BA; 6 years with MS/MA or 3 years with PhD
  • Secret clearance or be able to obtain one
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Must have strong Kubernetes work experience
  • Must live in the San Diego metro area
  • CompTIA Security+ Certification or the ability to obtain it within 45 days of hire
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience with:
    • Containerization (e.g., Docker, Podman, Buildah)
    • Container Orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenShift, Helm)
    • CI/CD automation tools (e.g., GitLab, Jenkins, AWS Code Build)
    • Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation)
    • Linux systems (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu)
    • Automation and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Cloud computing infrastructure or development (e.g., AWS, Azure)
    • Full stack software development (e.g., Java, Python, TypeScript, React, SQL)
    • Atlassian suite tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket)
