Remote Structural Engineering information

What is remote structural engineering?

A remote structural engineering job involves designing, analyzing, and ensuring the stability of structures while working from a remote location. Engineers use software tools like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis programs to collaborate with teams and clients virtually. Tasks may include reviewing blueprints, performing calculations, and providing recommendations for building integrity. Remote roles require strong communication skills and proficiency in digital collaboration tools to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote structural engineering?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering, a professional engineering (PE) license, and a strong grasp of structural analysis and design principles. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD.Pro, and SAP2000, as well as experience with digital collaboration tools, is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate with distributed teams and clients effectively. These competencies are essential to ensure accurate designs, timely project delivery, and seamless teamwork across remote environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote structural engineers often face challenges such as communicating complex technical ideas without face-to-face interaction and managing project information across different time zones or digital platforms. Staying organized, setting clear expectations, and using collaborative tools like shared drawing platforms or project management software can help overcome these hurdles. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and proactive communication are vital for maintaining alignment with team members and clients. By developing strong remote work habits and leveraging technology, remote structural engineers can contribute effectively to complex projects from anywhere.

Job description

Project Engineer – Structural (Building Structures)

Design the structures that shape communities. Lead projects that matter.

MSA is seeking a Project Engineer – Structural to lead the planning and design of impactful building structures serving municipalities and infrastructure clients. This role focuses on projects such as municipal buildings, water and wastewater facilities, waterfront structures, parks & recreation facilities, or tank design — projects that directly support thriving, resilient communities.

If you’re a licensed PE or SE who thrives on technical complexity, enjoys mentoring others, and wants to lead meaningful projects from concept through construction, this is your opportunity.

This hybrid on onsite role can be based out of our Jacksonville or Sarasota FL offices.

Who we are:

For over 100 years, MSA has helped shape communities through engineering excellence. What began in 1919 with a single practitioner in Baraboo, Wisconsin, has grown into a robust firm of over 500 employee owners across the U.S.

Our purpose is simple: to make communities stronger, safer, and more sustainable. We believe in the power of relationships, trust, and doing the right thing — and we take pride in seeing our work come to life.

At MSA, we understand that great work happens when you contribute great value, and maintain a balanced life and career.  That’s why we offer:

  • Employee Ownership = True Investment: MSA is a 100% employee-owned firm. That means when you join our team, you’re not just doing a job — you’re building your legacy and sharing in the success of the firm.

  • A Culture of Mentorship and Collaboration: Work alongside a talented, cross-disciplinary team that values mentorship, professional development, and team success.

  • A flex time program that empowers you to manage your schedule — because life doesn’t always fit inside 9 to 5

  • A flexible work environment, including hybrid and remote options where possible, to support your productivity and well-being

Structural Design & Technical Delivery

  • Lead structural design for municipal, water and wastewater, waterfront, parks and recreation, tank, and other infrastructure and building projects
  • Perform and review structural engineering calculations and analyses for steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and other structural systems as applicable to project needs
  • Develop structural plans, details, specifications, technical reports, and construction documents
  • Evaluate design alternatives and develop practical, constructible solutions that meet project requirements
  • Coordinate structural designs with architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, process, and other engineering disciplines
  • Maintain accountability for technical accuracy and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and QA/QC requirements

Project Execution & Construction Support

  • Lead assigned project components through planning, design, bidding, and construction with minimal oversight
  • Monitor scope, schedule, and budget for assigned work and proactively communicate project needs or concerns
  • Perform field investigations to document existing structural conditions and support rehabilitation or modification projects
  • Provide construction-phase support, including site visits, submittal reviews, responses to RFIs, and resolution of field-related technical issues
  • Coordinate and review work completed by junior engineers, designers, and technical support staff

Client & Team Collaboration

  • Communicate directly with clients and project stakeholders to coordinate deliverables, resolve technical issues, and provide project updates
  • Lead or participate in client and project team meetings
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate structural solutions into overall project designs
  • Build technical credibility and strong client relationships through responsive communication and high-quality work
  • Support proposals, project pursuits, and business development activities as opportunities arise

Mentorship & Professional Development

  • Mentor graduate engineers and junior staff through technical guidance, work review, and ongoing feedback
  • Share structural engineering knowledge and best practices across project teams
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, quality initiatives, and technical development within the Structural team

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required
  • Structural engineering emphasis preferred

Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant post-graduate structural engineering experience required
  • Experience designing structural systems for buildings, municipal infrastructure, water/wastewater facilities, waterfront structures, tanks, or similar projects preferred

Licensure

  • Florida Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license required
  • Multi-state licensure may be required based on project assignments

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, building codes, design standards, and construction practices
  • Experience performing structural calculations and developing construction documents
  • Proficiency with structural analysis/design software and CADD/BIM platforms applicable to structural engineering
  • Ability to lead project components and coordinate effectively across multiple disciplines
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and client-facing skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical and constructible solutions
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to balance multiple project demands
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff
  • Understanding of project scope, schedules, budgets, and the relationship between technical delivery and overall project performance
