What is a remote storage engineer?

A Remote Storage Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in designing, implementing, and managing data storage solutions for organizations while working remotely. Their responsibilities include configuring storage systems, troubleshooting storage-related issues, ensuring data security, and optimizing storage performance. They often work with technologies such as cloud storage, SAN (Storage Area Network), and NAS (Network Attached Storage). Remote Storage Engineers play a crucial role in maintaining data integrity and accessibility, especially for businesses with distributed or cloud-based infrastructure.

What does a remote storage engineer do?

As a remote storage engineer, you work from home to design and maintain information storage systems for clients. In this virtual position, your duties involve creating a database infrastructure that meets the needs of each client with whom you work. Part of your job involves assessing the specific needs of the client and designing appropriate solutions. You build or configure software, hardware, or cloud-computing systems, and you provide support and training for the employees who use the system. Other responsibilities include making updates, backing up data, and building and monitoring the network that connects to the data storage system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote storage engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Storage Engineer, you need strong expertise in storage technologies, data management, and backup solutions, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with systems like SAN/NAS, cloud storage platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and certifications such as CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you address issues efficiently while collaborating across remote teams. These skills and qualities ensure robust data availability, security, and seamless support for distributed enterprise environments.

How do remote storage engineers typically collaborate with on-site IT teams to resolve storage issues?

Remote Storage Engineers frequently work closely with on-site IT teams to diagnose and resolve storage-related incidents. This collaboration often involves remote access to systems, regular video or conference calls, and utilizing ticketing systems to track progress. Strong communication skills are essential, as Remote Storage Engineers must clearly document troubleshooting steps and coordinate actions, sometimes even guiding on-site staff through physical hardware checks or replacements. This teamwork ensures efficient resolution of issues despite physical distance.

What is the difference between Remote Storage Engineer vs Cloud Storage Administrator?

AspectRemote Storage EngineerCloud Storage Administrator
Required CredentialsIT certifications, storage-specific certifications (e.g., SNIA, CompTIA Storage+)Cloud platform certifications (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
Work EnvironmentData centers, remote offices, or cloud environmentsCloud platforms, remote or on-premises
Employer & Industry UsageIT companies, data centers, cloud providersCloud service providers, enterprises using cloud storage
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding storage infrastructure rolesManaging and optimizing cloud storage solutions

The main difference is that Remote Storage Engineers focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining storage systems across various environments, including data centers and cloud platforms. Cloud Storage Administrators primarily manage and optimize storage within cloud platforms like AWS or Azure. Both roles require storage knowledge, but their focus and certifications differ based on the environment they work in.

Sr. AI Engineer

Number of Positions:

1

Location:

Indianapolis, IN

Location Specifics:

Fully Remote

Job Summary:

Renaissance Benefits is seeking an experienced AI Engineer to join our growing team!

At Renaissance, the Sr. AI Engineer is a hands-on builder and technical leader who designs, builds, and ships production AI-powered and automation solutions that solve real business problems. This role blends deep individual contribution with technical leadership-setting engineering standards, mentoring engineers, and guiding solutions through design reviews. You'll build across the stack (web technologies, Python, data, and AI agents), own the platform "on-ramps" that let the broader organization safely bring AI-assisted applications to production, and partner with non-technical builders to turn their working prototypes into supported, production-grade systems. As part of a newly unified engineering organization, you'll also cross-train into enterprise integration work and help shape Renaissance's broader AI transformation.

What will this role entail?

  • Design, build, ship, and support production applications across the stack-web (TypeScript/React), Python services, and cloud functions.

  • Understand and work with data: query and integrate from enterprise data platforms and APIs.

  • Stand up and configure AI agents in enterprise agent platforms (tools/function-calling, structured output, and human-in-the-loop patterns).

  • Own the engineering SDLC that let others deliver safely: source control and repository organization, CI/CD, deployment pipelines, environments, and guardrails.

  • Partner with non-technical builders to bring their AI-assisted applications to production-reviewing, hardening, integrating, and deploying their work while they retain ownership of the business solution.

  • Advance AI enablement across the team through shared tooling, reusable skills and capabilities, and repeatable patterns that raise everyone's leverage.

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership-design reviews, architectural guidance, mentoring, and problem-solving to unblock delivery.

  • Uphold quality, performance, maintainability, and production-readiness standards, including responsible AI, security, and privacy practices.

  • Cross-train into enterprise integration engineering to support the unified engineering organization as it matures.

  • Help shape Renaissance's broader AI transformation strategy and execution.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, automation, or AI-related development roles.

  • Hands-on experience building and delivering production software systems, including AI-powered or automation solutions.

  • Full-stack capability: web technologies (e.g., TypeScript/React) and Python.

  • Working knowledge of GenAI/LLMs and common real-world patterns (e.g., agents, tool/function-calling, structured output, retrieval).

  • Experience working with data-querying and integrating from data platforms and APIs.

  • Cloud experience (Microsoft Azure preferred, or equivalent).

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals (testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and operational support).

  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot).

  • Ability to mentor engineers and to collaborate effectively with non-technical builders.

  • Familiarity with security, privacy, and responsible AI considerations in enterprise environments.

  • Strong communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Technical Qualifications

  • Production software engineering (design, build, ship, support) across web (TypeScript/React) and Python.

  • Cloud application development and operationalization (Azure Functions/Container Apps, identity/managed authentication, or equivalent).

  • Hands-on AI/GenAI application development, including configuring agents on enterprise agent platforms.

  • Data and API integration (enterprise data platforms and general APIs).

  • CI/CD, release management, and repository/environment management (e.g., GitHub Actions).

  • AI enablement: reusable tooling, shared skills/capabilities, and AI-native development tools.

  • Security, privacy, and responsible AI fundamentals.

  • Enterprise integration and automation familiarity a plus.
