Job description

As a member of the Enterprise Technology Development Team, a Sr Platform Engineer develops, tests, implements, and maintains proprietary business system platforms for Empyrean and our clients. They are responsible for troubleshooting systems problems and issues and identifying ways to improve existing or developed applications. They are also responsible for setting up and maintaining cloud infrastructures. This role requires the ability to write and maintain infrastructure as code (IaaC) using Terraform against mostly AWS to ensure repeatable and predictable infrastructure deployment. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Work within an agile development team working in sprints with deliverables and demonstration of results
  • Participate in architectural design meetings
  • Work closely with principal/staff engineers when implementing/changing platform features
  • Perform code reviews and uphold coding standards
  • Implement and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform (primarily AWS), applying reusable IaC module patterns, policy guardrails, and environment promotion standards. 
  • Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines for application and infrastructure delivery, including plan/apply workflows, promotion gates, rollback strategies, and release evidence collection.
  • Drive pipeline quality by implementing automated checks for security, compliance, policy-as-code, testing, and deployment reliability across team owned and adjacent delivery environments.
  • Maintain and enhance cloud tooling and shared platform services while implementing improvements to reliability, developer experience, and operational efficiency.
  • Share platform improvements/changes with the development teams
  • Ensure proper documentation of standard procedures
  • Maintain existing tools and infrastructure as necessary
  • Provide production environment support, including troubleshooting and ensuring system stability
  • Mentor other engineers and help raise the skill level of the team
  • Stay current with industry trends and making recommendations to help the organization innovate and excel

 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Advanced AWS engineering experience across core services (for example: VPC, IAM, EC2, ECS/EKS, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, Route53, KMS, and networking/security controls)
  • Advanced Terraform experience designing reusable IaC modules, managing remote state, implementing environment strategies, and supporting safe promotion workflows.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure-as-code patterns, including module versioning, drift detection, immutable infrastructure, and policy/compliance guardrails.
  • Advanced CI/CD expertise for both application and infrastructure delivery, including automated validation, promotion gates, rollback/rollback-forward strategies, and release traceability.
  • Strong automation and scripting skills (for example: Bash, PowerShell, Python) to support platform operations, deployment workflows, and reliability tasks. 
  • Effective cross-functional collaboration with Product, Engineering, QA, Security, and Operations to align priorities, manage risks, and deliver reliable outcomes.
  • Preferred C# skills with familiarity in .NET Core/.NET ecosystem.
  • Strong observability and operational troubleshooting skills, including metrics/logging/alerting patterns, incident triage, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation planning. 
  • Strong understanding of platform reliability, performance, security, and maintainability tradeoffs in cloud-native systems.
  • Advanced time-management and multi-tasking skills
  • Advanced written, verbal communication skills, specifically documentation
  • Detail-oriented, quality conscious yet flexible to other's ideas and suggestions

 

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent years of experience in computer science or completion of related boot camp program)
  • 5-10 years of experience as a software engineer
  • Proven hands-on experience with AWS platform engineering and infrastructure automation at scale. 
  • Proven experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines for both infrastructure and application delivery, including promotion controls, rollback strategies, and release quality checks. 
  • Experience supporting production systems with observability, incident response, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation ownership.
  • Experience implementing security and compliance controls in cloud and deployment workflows (for example IAM, secrets management, policy validation, and auditability).
  • Experience with enterprise application environments and cross-functional delivery contexts is preferred. 
  • Experience with benefits administration and Health & Welfare domains is a plus; equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training will be considered.
