What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Spacecraft Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Spacecraft Designer, you need a solid background in aerospace engineering, physics, and CAD design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, MATLAB, and familiarity with systems engineering software are essential, along with knowledge of applicable aerospace standards and regulations. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in collaborative, distributed teams. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure the creation of safe, innovative, and reliable spacecraft components while coordinating seamlessly with global teams.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote spacecraft design teams?

Remote spacecraft design teams often navigate challenges such as coordinating across different time zones, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring all team members have access to up-to-date technical documentation and simulation tools. Collaboration is typically managed through digital platforms, requiring strong self-motivation and proactive communication. While the remote setup offers flexibility, it also demands rigorous project management to meet strict deadlines and mission requirements.

What is remote spacecraft design?

Remote spacecraft design refers to the process of creating, developing, and testing spacecraft systems and components using digital collaboration tools, often allowing engineers and designers to work from different locations. This approach leverages advanced software for 3D modeling, simulation, and communication, enabling teams to design spacecraft without being physically present at a central facility. Remote spacecraft design has become increasingly popular due to advances in technology and the need for flexible work environments. It requires strong coordination, secure data sharing, and effective project management to ensure successful outcomes. The process may involve multiple disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, all collaborating remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Spacecraft Design vs Remote Satellite Engineer?

AspectRemote Spacecraft DesignRemote Satellite Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, aerospace certificationsEngineering degree, satellite systems certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, CAD software, remote collaborationSatellite systems, testing labs, remote coordination
Industry UsageAerospace, space agencies, private space companiesSatellite manufacturing, telecommunications, space industry

Remote Spacecraft Design and Remote Satellite Engineer roles both require aerospace engineering expertise and involve remote collaboration. However, spacecraft design focuses on creating entire spacecraft systems, while satellite engineers specialize in satellite-specific systems and deployment. Both roles are vital in the space industry and often overlap in skills and industry applications.

Job description

Mission Architect (Remote Sensing) - Millennium Space Systems

Company:

Millennium Space Systems

Millennium Space Systems, a part of Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), is a fast, agile small satellite company focused on national security space. Our missions have direct impact to global security, like missile warning and Earth observation.

Our team is curious, bold and innovative. We take risks, innovate and explore new techniques and technologies. We influence change because we challenge the status quo. And when we watch our satellites launch, we know each one of us made it happen.

Millennium programs are reshaping the future Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) enterprise for National Security Space customers, focusing on smaller, proliferated, and resilient systems across multiple mission areas. Millennium is establishing a resilient missile warning architecture that adds capability toglobal detection, warning and precision tracking of advanced threats, including hypersonic missile systems.

As a Mission Architect, you will be an OPIR Subject Matter Expert (SME), overseeing mission architecture and spacecraft/constellation design across one or more programs. You will oversee all aspects of designing, developing, and fielding Remote Sensing (RS) space segments, including integration with ground and user segments. You will design and develop modeling and simulation tools and methods to validate mission scenarios and assess end-to-end system performance against Key Performance Parameters (KPPs). You will be responsible for assessing sensor design, development, and performance, conducting solution trades, and decomposing requirements for payload and algorithm vendors. You will be integral to writing proposals, requirements definition, system design, integration & test, and on-orbit operations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Define architecture and system requirements forOPIRmissions

  • Lead modeling and simulation efforts to assess system performance

  • Develop CONOPS at the spacecraft, constellation, and mission level

  • Architect and implement Mission Data Processing (MDP) algorithms (onboard and ground-based)

  • Oversee mission level budgets and KPPs (e.g. LOS knowledge, jitter/smear, optical transmission, latency, etc.)

  • Ensure space system (including Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) payloads and bus components) meet mission level requirements

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or the physical sciences / computer science and 14+ years of experience in the design, development, delivery, and operation of space-based remote sensing missions

    • OR Master's Degree and 12+ years of experience in the design, development, delivery, and operation of space-based remote sensing missions

    • OR PhD and 10+ years of experience in the design, development, delivery, and operation of space-based remote sensing missions

  • Expertise in the design and performance of EO/IR sensors

  • An active Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 20+ years of experience in the design, development, delivery, and operation of space-based OPIR missions

  • Subject Matter Expertise in earth-observing EO/IR missions

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary technical teams

  • Experience with the missile warning, tracking, and defense mission across domains (air, ground, space, user, etc.)

  • Experience with modeling and simulation of constellation performance

  • Familiarity with mission modeling and simulation techniques to assess sensing mission performance

  • Possess active U.S. Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance
