Remote Solar Pv Design Engineer information

What does a remote solar PV design engineer do?

A Remote Solar PV Design Engineer is responsible for designing photovoltaic (PV) solar power systems from a remote location, using specialized software and tools to create layouts, perform energy calculations, and ensure system compliance with codes and standards. They collaborate with clients, project managers, and installation teams to produce detailed plans, select appropriate equipment, and optimize system performance. Their work enables the efficient and safe installation of solar panels for residential, commercial, or industrial projects, all while working from a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote solar PV design engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Solar PV Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, since they coordinate with project teams, clients, and contractors across different locations and time zones. Ensuring access to accurate site data and up-to-date project information can also be difficult without in-person visits. Utilizing robust design software, cloud-based collaboration tools, and maintaining regular virtual meetings can help overcome these obstacles and ensure project success. Staying organized and proactive in communication is key to thriving in this remote role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote solar PV design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Solar PV Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or renewable energy engineering, knowledge of photovoltaic systems, and a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helioscope, and experience with remote collaboration tools are typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you excel when working with distributed teams and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure accurate system designs, regulatory compliance, and successful project execution in a remote work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Solar Pv Design Engineer vs Solar Project Coordinator?

About Switch

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: DCO Facilities Chief Engineer

This role serves as the senior technical authority for facilities infrastructure within Data Center Operations. You provide subject matter expertise across electrical, mechanical, environmental, and life safety systems that support mission-critical operations. The role leads complex problem resolution, supports commissioning and design reviews, and drives continuous improvement across campus infrastructure without direct people management responsibility.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide senior technical leadership for critical power, cooling, and environmental systems.

  • Lead technical response efforts during infrastructure events and support root cause analysis activities.

  • Participate in Change Advisory Board reviews and ensure operational readiness for planned changes.

  • Support commissioning, startup, and deployment of new equipment across local and regional campuses.

  • Review mechanical and electrical design documents and provide operational feedback to engineering, construction, and vendors.

  • Drive improvements to maintenance strategies, automation efforts, and operational processes.

  • Lead technical working sessions to resolve recurring facilities challenges.

  • Review and approve procedures for maintenance activities, safety programs, and OSHA compliance.

  • Develop infrastructure performance metrics and provide reporting to leadership.

  • Mentor technicians and engineers to strengthen technical capability within DCO.

  • Deliver technical training related to arc flash safety, power systems, mechanical systems, and control sequences.

  • Support compliance audits and certification activities.

  • Travel as required to support multi-campus initiatives.

What We’re Looking For
  • Recognized technical authority in mission-critical facilities infrastructure.

  • Strong judgment during high-impact operational events.

  • Ability to translate technical findings into operational improvements.

  • Clear communication across technicians, engineers, vendors, and leadership.

  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and disciplined execution.

What You’ll Bring
  • 8 or more years of experience in facilities, electrical, or mechanical systems within data center or comparable mission-critical environments.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems including generators, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, ATS or STS units, PDUs, chillers, cooling towers, pumping systems, and fire suppression systems.

  • Provide technical leadership for all hydronic infrastructure, including chilled water plants, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, piping distribution networks, and water treatment systems, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and operational resilience.

  • Oversee preventive maintenance, condition assessments, and lifecycle management of hydronic and water treatment assets, leveraging data-driven analysis to improve system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements related to water management programs while driving continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Switch operational standards.

  • Strong understanding of control systems and sequences of operation.

  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and electrical drawings.

  • Experience supporting commissioning, design review, and infrastructure deployment.

  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional relevant certifications preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
