Team Lead - Structural Engineer
Data Centers
About the Position
As a Team Lead in the Data Center Structural group, you will be responsible for managing a team comprised of engineers, drafters, designers, and/or technicians for utility scale solar projects nationwide. As a Team Lead (TL), your primary responsibility will be the accurate, timely, and quality completion of scopes assigned to the team. The TL will assist in the development of the departments Standard Best Practices (SBPs) and enforcing / implementing them where pertinent. Team Leads will be a mentor and coach to employees on their team and help them individually as professionals.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000 / year
The salary range above is based upon the Denver, Colorado labor market.
This opportunity is available to both local / in-office (Lakewood, CO) and full-time remote candidates.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Performs and manages the structural engineering scopes of data center facilities
  • Produces and reviews full design packages including equipment general arrangement, site plans, grading plans, drainage plans, pile post plans, bill of materials, structure loading diagrams, structure design and fabrication details, driven pile design, concrete slab design, foundation design, CAB system, construction details, permitting, and supporting calculation packages
  • Develops structural loading for solar trackers and support systems, driven piles, skid and slab mounted equipment, and equipment enclosures using ASCE 7, IBC, CBC, and other appropriate standards
  • Designs and analyzes of driven pile, concrete drilled piers, footers, slab on grade and mat type foundations
  • Manages selection of equipment, writing equipment specifications, concrete and steel specifications, project and construction cost estimates, and project scheduling
  • Works with other project team members to produce project deliverables as assigned
  • Oversees project planning, scheduling, and coordination, for small to large scale projects
  • Supports business development, assists with marketing tasks, and prepares proposals as needed
  • Writes and reviews material, construction, and steel specifications
  • Reviews submittals for conformance with specifications and design
  • Prepares hand and computer-based calculations and models for structural designs; creates a simple hand check to quantify the computer-aided results
  • Prepares a variety of documents and reports associated with projects including cost estimates, budget reports, proposals, and studies
  • Performs field inspection and construction supervision services
  • Checks the work of designers, drafters, and field service personnel for overall quality and ensures accuracy as required
  • Researches and evaluates local AHJ design and code requirement and standards
  • Works with other project team members to produce project deliverables as assigned.
  • Oversees project planning, scheduling, and coordination, for small to large scale projects
  • Supports business development and assists with marketing tasks and preparing proposals
  • Interprets requests for proposals for projects, understands scope, and develops cost estimates, schedules, and assumptions
  • Assists with client contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments and meetings
  • Engages in lifelong learning to maintain knowledge of contemporary issues
  • Provides technical assistance and training for junior engineers
  • Assigns work and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff
  • Provides pre-sales technical support to customers and the NEI outside sales team
  • Reviews customer specifications and assist in formulating and communicating the commercial strategy to best address customer needs
  • Develops and maintains outstanding company-client relationships
  • Maintains high ethical and professional standards
  • Attends conferences, training workshops, seminars, regular undergraduate, and graduate classes as appropriate for advancement and as required to maintain quality of work
  • Attends safety training and adhere to all safety rules and guidelines
  • Understands the applications of relevant Codes and Standards
  • Other duties as assigned
Must Have
  • Education: Bachelor's in Civil/Structural Engineering or similar field from an accredited institution
  • Experience: 5+ years of relevant engineering or field experience
  • Licensure: FE is required, PE is preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, modeling, and design software such as SAP2000, L-pile, Mathcad, and AutoCAD Civil 3D, and others
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Project
  • Possess a strong understanding and applications of relevant Codes and Standards such as ASCE 7, ASCE 113, ACI 318, IBC, NESC, RUS Substation Design Guide, and other applicable ASCE, ACI, AISC, ANSI, ASTM, IEC, and IEEE standards for substation design
  • Ability to develop staff through mentoring and coaching
  • Possesses excellent critical thinking skills
  • Commercial understanding of the engineering or construction industries
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, and a skilled decision maker that is comfortable in a fast-paced design environment
  • Possesses effective written and oral communications skills
  • Good interpersonal and people skills
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
Nice to Have
  • Possess a strong understanding of the ASCE 7 loading and applicable IBC, ACI, AISC, ANSI, ASTM, IEC, and IEEE standards for solar plant design
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD required or can obtain within six (6) months of employment
  • Proficiency or can obtain proficiency within six (6) months of employment with SAP2000, STAAD, Revit, L-pile, or other structural analysis software
Working Conditions
  • Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting and some field work is also required
  • Travel: Typical: 15 - 25%
  • Physical Activities: Team Member is responsible for managing their own work and schedule and the work and schedule of their team with input from their supervisor and completing assigned tasks. The team member will coach, mentor, and develop the employees on their team toward fulfilling their individual career aspirations.
  • Managerial Responsibility: Team Member should identify discrepancies in assigned work and bring to attention of supervisor or engineer responsible for the project in a timely manner. Team Member team's work product should be self-checked in a manner that is suitable for review by the supervisor or engineer responsible for the project.
