Remote Solar Performance Engineer information

What is a Remote Solar Performance Engineer?

A Remote Solar Performance Engineer is a professional who monitors, analyzes, and optimizes the performance of solar power systems from a remote location. They use specialized software and tools to track energy production, identify issues, and recommend improvements for solar installations. Their work helps ensure that solar energy systems operate efficiently and meet performance goals, often collaborating with on-site technicians and project managers. This role is crucial for maintaining the reliability and profitability of solar power assets, especially in geographically dispersed installations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Solar Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Solar Performance Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical or mechanical engineering, solar PV systems, and data analysis, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with solar monitoring software, SCADA systems, and data analytics platforms, as well as certifications like NABCEP, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure accurate performance analysis, timely issue resolution, and optimized energy output for solar installations.

How does a Remote Solar Performance Engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to resolve system issues?

Remote Solar Performance Engineers play a critical role in diagnosing and troubleshooting performance issues by analyzing data from monitoring systems. They often collaborate closely with on-site technicians and field engineers via virtual meetings, detailed reports, and real-time communication tools. When a performance anomaly is detected, the remote engineer pinpoints the issue and provides actionable recommendations, ensuring on-site teams can address problems efficiently. This collaborative structure helps maximize system uptime and maintain optimal energy output.

What is the difference between Remote Solar Performance Engineer vs Remote Solar Design Engineer?

AspectRemote Solar Performance EngineerRemote Solar Design Engineer
Primary FocusOptimizing solar system performance, analyzing data, troubleshooting issuesCreating system layouts, designing solar panel configurations, selecting components
Required SkillsData analysis, performance monitoring, electrical knowledgeDesign software proficiency, electrical and mechanical design skills
Work EnvironmentField data analysis, remote monitoring, collaboration with installation teamsOffice-based design work, remote collaboration with engineers and clients
CertificationsPV installation certifications, electrical certifications often preferredDesign certifications like NABCEP Designer, CAD proficiency

The Remote Solar Performance Engineer focuses on analyzing and improving the efficiency of existing solar systems through data analysis and troubleshooting. In contrast, the Remote Solar Design Engineer specializes in designing new solar systems, creating layouts, and selecting components. Both roles require technical knowledge and certifications, but their core responsibilities differ in system optimization versus system design.

In this role, you will work closely with experienced Project Managers, Engineers and Scientists on the planning, design, permitting and implementation of diverse and complex renewables projects. Projects will include contributions to the development of construction drawings, technical specifications, contract documents, permit applications and calculations for projects involving renewable energy system components, including photovoltaic solar technology, battery energy storage systems, electrical substations, wind turbines and electric transmission and distribution facilities. Diverse and broad-based experiences, both in office and field settings, should be anticipated. This is a full time (40 hours a week) limited-term role with a duration of 12 months, extendable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and prepare high-voltage electrical engineering design including substations, switchyards, transmission and distribution lines, and associated infrastructure.
  • Review and prepare electrical designs, including one- and three-line diagrams, power calculations, electrical power systems, components, and control systems.
  • Review and prepare power system studies (e.g., load flow, short circuit, protective coordination, arc flash analysis etc.).
  • Understanding of PSCAD model development and analysis.
  • Preparation of one line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, bill of materials, wire schedule, and interconnection diagrams.
  • Construction and field experience including field and factory witnessing testing of high voltage equipment and systems.
  • Developing electrical construction and equipment specifications.
  • Supporting projects during construction, start-up, and commissioning as needed.
  • Prepare and support cable routing, converter station facility studies, and transmission line studies and siting and routing reports.
  • Understanding and ability to prepare and complete interconnection applications.
  • Prepare application packages for analyzing power system performance, conducting studies (e.g., load flow, grounding, fault analysis, etc.) and optimizing system efficiency for solar, BESS, and wind projects and high-voltage infrastructure.
  • Evaluate field data, perform calculations, prepare engineering reports, cost estimates, and comprehensive schedules and develop progress-tracking reports.
  • Conduct field investigations, construction oversight and quality assurance activities and provide field exploration support as needed for design parameter development, and during construction for oversight and Construction Quality Assurance purposes.
  • Prepare technical proposals and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Assist clients in developing strategies and preparing designs for proposed facilities, and prepare project work scopes, schedules and budgets.
  • Provide technical expertise to navigate complex technical/regulatory issues in the renewable energy and power sectors.
  • Participate in project teams and independently on a global platform in varying settings that demand new and creative solutions.
  • Interact with scientists in the site investigation, risk management, and planning disciplines as integrated teams as well as engineers in design and construction.
