Job description

Atwell is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support and help lead complex projects across our Power & Energy team, with a focus on Power Generation. This role will play a key part in overseeing and coordinating engineering efforts related to substation physical design, protection and controls (P&C), and interconnection for utility-scale renewable energy projects including solar, wind, and BESS.

As a senior member of the team, this individual will provide technical leadership across multi-disciplinary project teams, support client-facing engineering execution, and help guide projects from early development through detailed design and delivery. This is an opportunity to join a growing national team supporting some of the most impactful projects in power generation and grid infrastructure.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and oversee electrical engineering design efforts for power generation projects, with primary involvement in substation physical, protection and controls, and interconnection engineering.
  • Coordinate with internal teams across civil, structural, SCADA, transmission, distribution, studies, project management, and construction to ensure integrated and high-quality project execution.
  • Support the development, review, and delivery of engineering packages including one-lines, three-lines, wiring diagrams, relay schemes, physical layouts, design criteria, technical reports, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Provide senior-level technical guidance for interconnection support, including review of utility requirements, interconnection packages, and engineering deliverables tied to ISO/RTO and utility processes.
  • Oversee engineering quality, technical accuracy, and compliance with applicable codes and standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, and internal QA/QC procedures.
  • Partner with project managers and leadership on scope development, scheduling, resource planning, budgeting, proposal support, and change order review.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, site walkdowns, and construction support, serving as a technical representative for the electrical team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical engineering within power generation, substations, utility infrastructure, or renewable energy projects.
  • Strong background supporting or overseeing substation physical design and/or protection and controls design for medium- to high-voltage projects.
  • Experience supporting interconnection-related engineering efforts for utility-scale generation projects, including coordination with utilities, developers, and internal studies teams.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry standards and practices including NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and NFPA.
  • Proficiency with engineering and design tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office, with exposure to power systems software such as ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSCAD, ASPEN, PowerWorld, or similar tools preferred.
  • PE license preferred, or the ability to obtain licensure based on experience and career level.

Preferred Background

  • Experience supporting utility-scale solar, wind, and BESS projects.
  • Ability to work across both technical execution and project coordination responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with clients, internal leadership, and cross-functional engineering teams.

Pay Range - $100,000 - $170,000+ base, bonus, and company benefits. This role can be fully remote anywhere across the US.
