What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ship deck officer?

To thrive as a Remote Ship Deck Officer, you need strong navigational expertise, maritime safety knowledge, and typically a relevant maritime degree along with a valid officer license or certification (such as STCW). Familiarity with electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), remote vessel monitoring platforms, and communication systems is crucial. Exceptional decision-making, situational awareness, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing remote operations and collaborating with onshore teams. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient vessel operations and compliance with maritime regulations in remote or autonomous shipping environments.

What are some unique challenges remote ship deck officers face compared to traditional onboard deck officers?

Remote Ship Deck Officers often deal with challenges such as maintaining clear communication with onboard crew and shore-based teams, as well as relying heavily on advanced remote monitoring technology to oversee vessel operations. Unlike traditional roles, they must be adept at troubleshooting issues from a distance and ensuring that safety and compliance standards are met without being physically present. Adapting to a remote work environment also requires strong self-discipline and excellent time management skills, as well as the ability to quickly interpret data from multiple sources to support decision-making.

What is a remote ship deck officer?

Remote Ship Deck Officers are maritime professionals responsible for overseeing a vessel’s navigation and operations from a remote location, rather than being physically present on the ship. They use advanced technologies such as satellite communications, sensors, and remote-control systems to monitor and direct ship movements, ensure safety, and comply with maritime regulations. This role is becoming increasingly important as the shipping industry adopts more automation and remote management solutions. Remote Ship Deck Officers typically collaborate with onboard crew and shore-based teams to ensure efficient and safe vessel operations.

Brand Strategist

Nen Creative

San Francisco, CA • Remote

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Job description

About Nen Creative

Nen Creative partners with tech startups to launch bold ideas into the world, creating the brands, products, and stories that fuel their growth.

Since 2022, we've partnered with some of the world's top founders and institutions, including Amazon, Pear VC, Andreessen Horowitz, Mercor, Context Inc, Netic, Listen Labs, Tech Week, Mantis VC, Spur, Flora, and more.

We're growing fast and looking for great people to join us.

About the Opportunity

We're looking for a Brand Strategist to lead the strategy practice at Nen.

The work centers on brand strategy for our branding engagements — positioning, narrative, audience, messaging, and the underlying point of view that gives a company its voice in the world. From there, the strategy extends into the marketing and copywriting that brings each brand to life across websites, decks, launch campaigns, and the various touchpoints our clients ship. You'll lead client engagements end-to-end, from discovery and research through final execution, working with founders who are often figuring out what they stand for and how to talk about it in public for the first time.

What You'll Do
  • Lead brand strategy engagements for our branding clients — positioning, narrative, audience, messaging frameworks, brand voice, and identity briefs

  • Run discovery and research to get to a strategy: founder interviews, audience research, competitive landscape, brand audits, and stakeholder workshops

  • Develop marketing strategy for clients across launch campaigns, content programs, channel mix, and go-to-market storytelling, building on the brand foundation

  • Write copy across websites, decks, brand books, launch materials, and other touchpoints — landing pages, manifestos, product narratives, taglines, and short-form social

  • Brief and partner with our brand designers and creative leads so that strategy translates cleanly into identity, design, and the rest of the work we ship

  • Partner with our producers, motion team, and editors to make sure brand language and voice carry through every output

  • Help scope strategy work inside larger branding and production engagements, balancing depth with feasibility

  • Support new business when strategy is part of the pitch, helping shape opportunities from inquiry through close

  • Push the work beyond the obvious. We value people with strong taste, sharp thinking, and the appetite to refine a positioning line until it actually lands

What We're Looking For
  • 4 to 7 years of experience in brand strategy, ideally at a brand or marketing consultancy, strategy-led studio, or in-house at a fast-moving company

  • Strong portfolio of brand strategy work — positioning, narrative, messaging frameworks, brand voice, and the briefs that bridge strategy into identity

  • Deep understanding of how brand strategy translates into identity, voice, and design, and how to brief and partner with designers to bring it to life

  • Strong copywriter across long-form and short-form, with writing samples that demonstrate range across narrative, web, decks, and brand

  • Marketing strategy fundamentals — audience, positioning, gtm, channels, funnel, and how brand strategy connects to launch, content, and performance

  • Strong research instincts. You know how to design discovery for a new client, ask the right questions in a founder interview, and pull insights from a messy landscape into a clear point of view

  • Confident client-facing presence. You can lead a workshop with a founder and a leadership team, hold the room, and push back when it matters

  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving agency environment where timelines shift, scopes evolve, and projects sometimes require after-hours responsiveness

  • Self-directed and remote-ready. You can run your own discovery, manage your own timelines, and keep clients aligned without constant supervision

  • Calm, organized, and dependable under pressure, with the ability to keep multiple projects and stakeholders moving at once

  • High attention to detail in writing, frameworks, and client deliverables

Why Join Nen
  • Be part of a small, fast-growing creative studio trusted by world-class startups and investors

  • Work directly with the partners on ambitious, high-impact projects across some of the most interesting companies in tech

  • Lead and define the strategy practice at Nen, with real ownership over how we approach the work and how the team grows

  • Help shape the brands, narratives, and stories of the next generation of tech companies

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), PTO, and company holidays
