The role at a glance:

NBBJ Columbus is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our talented Digital Infrastructure team. Our ideal candidate is highly organized, possesses strong project management and time management skills. Candidates should possess and demonstrate a successful track record of collaborating with internal and external resources to design and implement scalable solutions and troubleshooting complex problems while meeting deadlines and budget constraints. The desire and ability to work in a fast paced, ever-changing, collaborative environment is essential. 

In your new role, you will:

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Manage enterprise virtualization and storage platforms including VMware, HPE storage systems, and related capacity, performance, replication, and lifecycle planning. 
  • Monitor storage health, utilization, throughput, latency, and growth trends; identify risks early and recommend remediation before business operations are affected. 
  • Administer and improve backup, recovery, and retention services using Commvault, with emphasis on restore validation, ransomware resilience, and disaster recovery readiness. 
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure problems and develop practical, sustainable solutions. 
  • Provide escalation support for systems administrators, engineers, and internal support teams. 
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and cross-train team members to improve knowledge sharing and operational resilience. 
  • Plan, design, build, and maintain highly available, reliable, and scalable virtualized server platforms. 
  • Learn, evaluate, and integrate evolving infrastructure technologies with existing systems. 
  • Partner with vendors to evaluate product offerings, resolve technical issues, and support procurement decisions. 
  • Document workflows, processes, procedures, configurations, and infrastructure service use cases. 
  • Participate in a team on-call rotation. 
  • Work extended hours when needed for critical outages, serious incidents, or disaster recovery events. 
  • Travel occasionally, generally less than two weeks per year. 

What you will need to succeed:

  • At least seven years of relevant systems engineering experience in a mid-sized, multilocation enterprise environment. 
  • Direct, recent, hands-on professional experience with the following: 
  • Virtualization platforms, preferably VMware, and HPE GreenLake. 
  • Microsoft Windows Server management, failover clusters, and file servers on currently supported versions. 
  • Enterprise storage administration, preferably VMware, and HPE storage platforms. 
  • Backup and recovery platforms, preferably Commvault, including backup policy design, restore validation, retention, and disaster recovery support. 
  • Microsoft Active Directory and Entra ID in a multisite environment. 
  • Server security hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation. 
  • Understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals and related protocols, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, and SSL. 
  • Methodical, analytical approach to troubleshooting. 
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills. 
  • High degree of autonomy, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively with peers and customers. 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced, collaborative environment. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Commvault administration, reporting, automation, and troubleshooting. 
  • Linux server administration, including storage-oriented administration and ZFS concepts. 
  • HPE server, storage, and firmware lifecycle management. 
  • Microsoft Azure infrastructure services. 
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration or support. 
  • Microsoft PKI management. 
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Citrix ADC. 
  • Atlassian Jira and Agile project management practices. 

This role requires the individual to be based in the United States. This role is fully remote*, and the ideal candidate is located within a 2 hour radius of either the Columbus, Ohio office located at: 250 S. High Street, Suite 300, Columbus, Ohio 43215 or the Charlotte, North Carolina office located at: 1018 Jay Street, Suite 470, Charlotte, North Carolina 28208.

The annual base pay range for this role is anticipated to be between $100,000 and $120,000 for Columbus, Ohio candidates, and between $100,000 and $130,000 for Charlotte or Raleigh, North Carolina candidates. Actual compensation for successful candidates will be carefully determined based on a number of factors, including their skills, qualifications and experience.

*Some travel may be requested due to studio and office needs - all travel will be coordinated with NBBJ's internal travel team, and the team member will discuss travel arrangements in advance with their studio team and leaders.
