Remote Senior Software Engineer information

What does a remote senior software engineer do?

As a remote senior software engineer, your job is to code, test, and debug computer software applications for your employer. In this role, you may test the deployment of software within your network, ensure it functions properly on each operating system, choose which programming language to use, and help manage the development process. Senior software engineers frequently guide and review work from junior software engineers, determine how to translate business requirements into technical specifications, and provide input on hiring decisions relevant to the company's programming needs. Remote senior software engineers do all of this work from home or from a personal office. You use phones, email, text, and virtual office software to stay in touch with other employees.

What is a senior software engineer remote?

A senior software engineer job is a remote, high-level position that involves programming code and software. You work from home and telecommunicate with other IT support staff. A senior software engineer can work on various systems, but your duties are similar. Your responsibilities are to develop, test, and debug code. You may also build, update, or manage a software network. A software engineering professional often works on the entire development life cycle and must find and correct issues quickly and efficiently.

What does a remote senior software engineer do?

A Remote Senior Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains complex software systems while working from a location outside of the traditional office. They often lead development teams, set technical direction, review code, and mentor junior engineers. Their responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams, ensuring code quality, and implementing best practices in software development. Remote Senior Software Engineers use various communication and project management tools to stay connected with their teams and deliver high-quality software solutions efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote senior software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Senior Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in software development, architecture, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in computer science and several years of professional programming experience. Proficiency with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and relevant certifications are highly valued. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you excel in remote, cross-functional teams. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality solutions, collaborate effectively, and lead complex projects independently.

What are some common challenges faced by remote senior software engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote Senior Software Engineers often face challenges such as maintaining effective communication across different time zones, ensuring strong collaboration with distributed teams, and staying aligned with project goals. Proactively scheduling regular check-ins, utilizing collaboration tools like Slack or Jira, and setting clear expectations can help overcome these hurdles. Additionally, building strong documentation habits and fostering relationships through virtual meetings can enhance teamwork and project success.

Job description

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve โ€“ we care.

What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrowโ€™s health today, we want to hear from you.

The Specialty Access & Affordability value stream is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer to join the FastAuth team. In this role you will build and scale the applications that move specialty prescriptions through prior authorization faster, reducing the time between a prescription being written and a patient starting therapy.

You will work alongside a collaborative group of skilled engineers who take pride in consistent delivery and technical excellence, spanning React front ends, .NET services, and event-driven integrations running on Azure. This is a hands-on role on a team that ships continuously and owns what it builds.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop robust, scalable web applications using TypeScript, React, and/or .NET

  • Partner with engineers and architects to design and implement Azure cloud solutions

  • Lead and coach team members through difficult problems

  • Help build and maintain our event-driven architecture

  • Turn complex business requirements into elegant, simple technical solutions

  • Raise the bar on the team through code review, pairing, and mentoring less experienced developers

  • Deliver high-quality work at a predictable cadence and help the team sustain it

  • Support what you build in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement

  • Participate in agile ceremonies, technical planning, and design reviews

Priority will be given to candidates who reside in the Columbus, OH metropolitan area.

We are unable to provide sponsorship for this role presently or in the future

Minimum Requirement

Degree or equivalent experience, plus typically 8+ years of relevant professional experience.

Critical Skills

  • 8+ years building and shipping production software applications

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React, and/or .NET

  • Experience with Azure cloud services and infrastructure

  • Working knowledge of event-driven architecture, ideally including Kafka

  • A track record of using AI tools effectively in your day-to-day development workflow

  • Ability to take a feature from ambiguous requirement to production with limited direction

  • Consistent follow-through on commitments and a bias toward finishing work

  • Collaborative approach to software development and problem solving

  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities evolve as the product does

Additional Skills (Preferred)

  • Healthcare applications, particularly EHR integrations

  • RPA technology

  • FHIR standard, SMART on FHIR integrations, and healthcare data exchange

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing

  • Contributions to open source projects or developer communities

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Work Environment

Hybrid, based out of the Columbus, Ohio office. Occasional collaboration across time zones with distributed team members and partners.
