What is a remote senior project manager?

Remote Senior Project Managers are experienced professionals responsible for leading and overseeing projects from a remote location. They coordinate teams, manage budgets and timelines, and ensure project goals are met, all while working outside of a traditional office environment. Their role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, as they often work with cross-functional teams spread across different locations. Remote Senior Project Managers use digital tools to manage tasks, track progress, and facilitate collaboration. They are vital in organizations that support distributed or hybrid work models.

What does a remote senior project manager do?

As a remote senior project manager, you work from home to manage a project for a company or organization. This involves planning the project, ensuring all employees meet each deadline, and helping lead the development of the project. In this role, you often help determine the scope of the project, make decisions about what types of employees to hire, and manage the project's budget. This is a relatively unusual position, but it has become more popular in recent years as other employees have started to work from home as well. As the name suggests, this is a senior position that is usually only available to applicants who have many years of experience managing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote senior project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Senior Project Manager, you need expertise in project management methodologies, strong organizational skills, and a proven track record in managing complex projects, often supported by a bachelor's degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana, Jira, or Microsoft Project, as well as remote collaboration platforms like Slack or Zoom, is crucial. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities are soft skills that set top performers apart in this role. These skills are essential for successfully leading distributed teams, ensuring timely project delivery, and maintaining alignment across stakeholders in a virtual environment.

How do remote senior project managers effectively build and maintain team cohesion across distributed teams?

Remote Senior Project Managers often lead teams spread across different locations and time zones, which can make fostering a strong team dynamic challenging. They typically use regular video conferences, collaborative project management tools, and clear communication protocols to ensure everyone stays aligned and connected. By proactively encouraging open communication, organizing virtual team-building activities, and setting clear expectations, they help maintain trust and motivation within the team. This approach not only supports project success but also cultivates a positive and collaborative remote work environment.

Department: Sales Operations / BPO Programs
Location: Fully Remote (candidates located in Tucson, AZ are a plus)
Role Type: Contract (6-month engagement)
About Our Client
Our client is a well-established technology company providing accounting and financial software solutions to small businesses, self-employed individuals, and accounting professionals. The organization operates on a global scale and is currently expanding its Sales Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) partnerships to support continued growth. This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced, cross-functional environment during a period of significant organizational scaling.
Job Description
We are seeking a Project Manager - Sales BPO Programs to support two concurrent, high-impact initiatives focused on scaling our client's global Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) partnerships. The Project Manager will drive the launch of two new BPO partners and support the development of a Global Sales BPO Center of Excellence, building the documentation, timelines, processes, and partner relationships needed to successfully execute both initiatives.
This role will work cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Data Science, Sales Operations, Sales Leadership, Corporate Onboarding, Sales Technology, and BPO partners, and will report directly to the Sr. BPO Sales Strategist. The ideal candidate is passionate about building scalable processes from the ground up, thrives in ambiguity, and is comfortable driving alignment across senior stakeholders without direct authority.
Both initiatives - the New BPO Launch and the Global Sales BPO Center of Excellence - will run simultaneously throughout the six-month contract.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end project and change management plans for the New BPO Launch and Global Sales BPO Center of Excellence.
  • Create and maintain project charters, project plans, action trackers, risk and issue logs, and decision registers.
  • Build the first official documentation of the BPO onboarding process.
  • Design a Partner Management Framework (PMF) and/or playbooks to support scalable BPO partnerships globally.
  • Drive escalations and key go/no-go decisions ahead of established launch dates.
  • Identify resources required from each partner team to deliver both initiatives on time.
  • Apply and promote project and change management best practices.
  • Build strong partnerships across Finance, Legal, Data Science, Sales Operations, Sales Leadership, Corporate Onboarding, Sales Technology, and Partner Management.
  • Facilitate alignment with the Sr. BPO Sales Strategist and senior stakeholders regarding timelines, requirements, risks, and decisions.
  • Ensure BPO partners and internal teams remain informed and engaged throughout changes.
  • Develop stakeholder engagement and communication strategies, including executive-style updates through Slack and Google Sheets.
  • Represent Sales BPO Programs in cross-functional planning.
  • Identify processes that need to be documented, standardized, or improved to support the Center of Excellence.
  • Lead retrospectives following the New BPO Launch and incorporate lessons learned into future frameworks and playbooks.
Required Experience/Skills
  • 5+ years of experience in Project Management, Program Management, or Change Management.
  • Demonstrated experience building documentation, processes, frameworks, or playbooks where none previously existed.
  • Strong ability to lead through influence and drive accountability without direct authority.
  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate business objectives into clear priorities and execution plans.
  • Experience applying structured project and change management methodologies.
  • Ability to identify and manage risks, dependencies, decisions, and escalations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including communicating program status and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate qualitative and quantitative information and make data-informed decisions.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex, concurrent initiatives.
  • Strong stakeholder management and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to build scalable and repeatable processes and frameworks.
  • Working proficiency with Jira, Confluence, Slack, and Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Experience using AI tools such as Claude, Cowork, ChatGPT, or Gemini to support project management activities including documentation, synthesis, and reporting.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Previous BPO, partner, or vendor management experience.
  • Project or change management certification such as PMP or Agile.
