As a remote senior project manager, you work from home to manage a project for a company or organization. This involves planning the project, ensuring all employees meet each deadline, and helping lead the development of the project. In this role, you often help determine the scope of the project, make decisions about what types of employees to hire, and manage the project's budget. Job description

About Us

Whitlock Consulting Group (WCG) is a consulting firm built exclusively for the utility and municipal sectors. For more than a decade, we have guided mid-sized utilities (typically 50,000 to 200,000 accounts) through their most significant technology investments — large-scale software implementations spanning Customer Information Systems (CIS), ERP and financials, asset management, metering, customer portals, and payment processing.

We support the full project lifecycle: needs assessments and gap analyses, strategic roadmaps, RFP and software selection, and — where the majority of our work lives — leading and supporting complex software implementations that typically span 14 months to three years. Our team brings deep experience from both the utility side and the technology side, delivering project management, quality assurance, business analysis, process design, testing, training, and change management. Today, we serve approximately 45 utility and municipal clients across the U.S. and have built a reputation as a trusted implementation partner that consistently delivers successful projects.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager to lead implementation projects.  This role may be used to supplement the client (utility) team or used to partner with the software vendor and help lead the delivery of chosen software solution.

Reporting to the Director of Project Management, this is a senior, full-time position for an experienced project leader who understands software delivery from a technology vendor or systems implementor side. Experience on the client (utility) side is a plus, but not required. You will own the successful delivery of your assigned client projects while helping advance how WCG executes — including further developing our PMO standards and templates and integrating advanced technology and AI automation into the way we manage projects.

You will serve as the bridge between software development teams, the delivery team, and clients — the liaison who turns complexity into a clear, well-run project. Beyond day-to-day delivery, you will contribute to the standards, templates, and methodology that strengthen the practice, and you will look for opportunities to apply modern tools and AI-driven automation to improve efficiency, quality, and outcomes.

What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Lead individual client implementation projects end to end, owning the successful delivery of scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Partner with vendor and client-side project managers and teams to keep implementations on track and stakeholders aligned.
  • Manage scope, timelines, budgets, resources, and risk, holding both internal teams and vendor partners accountable in a constructive, relationship-centered way.
  • Help further develop WCG Delivery's PMO standards, templates, and delivery methodology, contributing tools and improvements that future projects and project managers will use.
  • Integrate advanced technology and AI automation into project management workflows — identifying, piloting, and applying tools that improve efficiency, reporting, and delivery quality.
  • Act as the bridge between software developers, the delivery team, and the client, translating between technical and delivery needs and keeping all parties aligned.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across clients, vendor partners, and internal teams — the foundation of successful delivery.
  • Provide project reporting, facilitating steering committee meetings and communicating project status, risks, and recommendations.

What You'll Bring (Qualifications)

  • PMP certification preferred. A relevant master's degree and/or equivalent project management experience may be considered in lieu of certification.
  • Substantial project management experience leading complex software implementations, ideally gained with a software vendor or systems implementor (CIS or utility-sector experience is a plus but not required).
  • Proven ability to manage scope and expectations with demanding clients — finding ways forward without creating adversarial dynamics.
  • Strong command of the mechanics of project management: planning, resourcing, budgeting, and timeline management.
  • Experience using project management tools such as Smartsheet, Microsoft Project, Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar platforms.
  • Enthusiasm for leveraging advanced technology and AI automation to streamline project management, with a willingness to learn, pilot, and adopt new tools.
  • Excellent stakeholder-relationship skills and a consistent track record of following through on commitments.
  • Experience working alongside or as a systems implementor, coordinating between vendors, integrators, and client teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust quickly and create accountability across organizations without direct authority.
  • Interest in contributing to PMO standards, templates, and continuous process improvement.

Location, Travel & Compensation

Reporting: Reports to the Director of Project Management.

Work Arrangement: Remote. WCG is a work-from-home company. Certain projects may require maintaining client time-zone working hours to align with project teams.

Travel: Approximately 25–40%, depending on project phase and client needs.

Compensation: $105,000 – $130,000 annually, commensurate with experience, plus bonus potential.

Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401(K)

Why Join Us:

  • Play a key delivery role in a growing systems implementor practice.
  • Help shape the PMO standards, templates, and AI-driven automation that future projects will use.
  • Partner with leading utility software vendors on large-scale enterprise implementations.
  • Work alongside experienced consultants in a collaborative, low-bureaucracy environment.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Competitive compensation, bonus potential, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for long-term growth.

WCG does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, genetics, pregnancy, veteran status, or any other characteristic legally protected in employment opportunities and benefits.
