What does a remote secretary do?

A remote secretary, or virtual assistant, performs the same administrative functions of an in-house receptionist or secretary, but in a remote capacity. You work from home and handle clerical tasks for an office, department, or client. Responsibilities include managing correspondence, making and receiving phone calls, overseeing the office schedule and appointment books, and other duties as necessary. You may perform specialized tasks or assist your employer with various tasks depending on your experience and the type of organization or client you work for, such as writing real estate listings for a realtor’s office or editing legal documents for a law firm.

Familiarity with office software like Microsoft Office Suite, cloud-based collaboration tools, and virtual meeting platforms is typically required. Excellent written and verbal communication, discretion, and proactive problem-solving are key soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure efficient support for executives and teams, smooth virtual operations, and effective remote communication.
