What is a remote SDR?

Remote SDRs (Sales Development Representatives) are sales professionals who work from a remote location, rather than an office, to identify and qualify potential sales leads for their company. They typically use phone calls, emails, and online messaging to reach out to prospects, set appointments, and nurture relationships. Remote SDRs play a crucial role in the early stages of the sales process by generating interest and passing qualified leads to the sales team. Their responsibilities often require strong communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to use digital sales tools effectively.

What are remote jobs for an SDR?

As a remote SDR, you support a sales department by calling customers and determining whether or not they qualify as a prospective lead. In effect, remote sales development representatives help filter out bad leads so other sales personnel can focus on closing deals with the best customers. Unlike many sales-related roles, this job does not emphasize closing deals—instead, it focuses on moving qualified leads through the sales pipeline. In this role, you may cold call or email potential leads, answer common questions, and coordinate efforts with salespeople and marketers to maximize the efficiency of the filtering process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote SDR, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote SDR (Sales Development Representative), you need strong communication skills, a foundational understanding of sales processes, and often a bachelor's degree or relevant sales experience. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, sales engagement tools, and email automation platforms is typically required. Outstanding self-motivation, resilience, and the ability to work independently make someone stand out in this remote position. These skills ensure effective prospecting, relationship-building, and consistent achievement of sales targets in a virtual environment.

How does a remote SDR typically collaborate with sales and marketing teams to achieve targets?

As a Remote Sales Development Representative (SDR), you’ll regularly coordinate with both sales and marketing teams through virtual meetings, shared CRM tools, and communication platforms like Slack or Teams. Collaboration involves nurturing leads generated by marketing, qualifying them through personalized outreach, and passing high-potential prospects to account executives. Successful SDRs proactively share feedback on lead quality and campaign effectiveness, helping to align team strategies and improve conversion rates. Building strong remote relationships and maintaining clear communication are essential for hitting sales targets and fostering team success.

Understanding these differences helps candidates align their skills with the right position in the sales pipeline.

How to become a remote sales development representative?

To become a remote sales development representative, candidates typically need strong communication skills, familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) tools, and a basic understanding of sales processes. Relevant experience in sales, marketing, or customer service can be beneficial, and many roles require a high school diploma or equivalent. Job description

Employment Type: Full-time

Location: Canada or US

Location type: Remote or Hybrid if in the GTA (3 days at the office in Downtown Toronto - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday)]

Timezone: Eastern Standard Time

About Bettermode

Bettermode helps B2B SaaS companies build powerful customer communities that drive retention, expansion, and advocacy through engagement, self-service, and content creation.

Built with a modern UX, Bettermode is fast to launch, easy to scale, and measurable with built-in analytics. Backed by Silicon Valley investors and trusted by brands like HiBob, Bill and Flutterflow, we're proud to connect millions of end-users daily.

As we enter our next stage of growth, we're expanding our outbound sales motion to complement our strong inbound engine. We're looking for a SDR Manager who can roll up their sleeves, build from the ground up, and later scale a world-class team.

The Role

This is a player-coach role for someone who thrives on building systems, testing hypotheses, and using AI tools to drive efficiency. You'll be the architect of Bettermode's outbound engine, defining our ICP targeting, experimenting with messaging, and setting up automation that makes our sales development motion scalable and data-driven.

In the first 6-9 months, you'll personally execute outbound campaigns to validate the model before hiring and leading your first SDRs. Over time, you'll evolve into a leadership role focused on pipeline growth, enablement, and team performance.

What You'll Do

Strategy & System Building

  • Design and own Bettermode's outbound strategy, including ICP segmentation, messaging, sequencing, and channel mix (email, LinkedIn, calling).
  • Develop a repeatable, data-driven outbound motion that consistently creates qualified pipeline.
  • Build and document the Outbound Playbook covering messaging, cadences, and qualification frameworks.
  • Partner closely with Marketing and Sales to ensure seamless lead handoff and feedback loops.

Execution (Player-Coach Phase)

  • Personally execute outbound campaigns to test hypotheses and prove efficiency.
  • Optimize workflows and messaging using AI tools for personalization, research, and automation (e.g., ChatGPT, Clay, Instantly, Apollo, Zapier).
  • Build dashboards to track pipeline creation, meeting quality, and conversion rates.
  • Continuously A/B test messaging and channels to refine what works.

Who You Are

  • Experienced builder: 6+ years in SDR/BDR or sales roles, with at least 2 years in a leadership or player-coach capacity.
  • AI-native: Fluent in leveraging AI tools to automate prospecting, personalize outreach, enrich data, and optimize workflows.
  • Data-driven operator: Obsessed with efficiency and reporting. You know your way around CRM data, sequence analytics, and funnel metrics.
  • Hands-on doer: Comfortable running sequences, testing copy, and handling early discovery calls.
  • Systems thinker: You build repeatable processes that scale, not one-off experiments.
  • Collaborative: You partner cross-functionally with Marketing and Sales with ease.
  • Curious and resourceful: You experiment constantly, fail fast, and iterate faster.

Why Join Bettermode

  • Be the architect of a brand-new outbound motion at a established SaaS company.
  • Work alongside an experienced founding team that values autonomy, experimentation, and results.
  • Leverage cutting-edge AI tools to build an outbound system of the future.
  • Competitive OTE (base salary + commission), meaningful upside, and a chance to make direct impact.

Benefits

  • At Bettermode, we're dedicated to empowering our team to thrive, both professionally and personally. We offer location-based, competitive compensation that reflects your expertise and impact, with annual reviews so you can grow with us. Our culture is built on ownership and trust, giving you real influence over how we scale and succeed.
  • From your very first day, you and your family are covered by comprehensive Canadian health benefits, dental and vision included, so you can focus on what matters most.
  • Enjoy unlimited paid vacation days, paid parental leave to support your family, and bereavement leave should you need it.
  • You'll have all the equipment you need provided, or you can bring your own device and access our Device Upgrade Policy, an interest-free hardware stipend repayable via payroll deductions, allowing you to upgrade when you need.
  • We want you to thrive in your work: every team member receives a monthly Tech & Appreciation Stipend, perfect for testing new software or tools and improving your workflows as you see fit.
  • Our downtown Toronto office is less than a 15-minute walk from Union Station, with a free shuttle running throughout the day. The office features complimentary snacks, coffee, video games, and board games, as well as dedicated seating and a flexible environment that supports creativity, focus, and teamwork.
  • Join a globally diverse and collaborative team where you're supported to do your best work and have access to all the resources needed to succeed.

Additional Information

  • Headcount: This is a new position at Bettermode.
  • Compensation Range:
    • 100-130k base/130-170k OTE (US)
    • 130-150 base/160-180 OTE (Canada)
  • AI Use: Large language models (LLM) might be used in the hiring process for this position to screen, assess or select job applicants.
