What is a remote scrum master?

A Remote Scrum Master is a professional who facilitates the Scrum process for distributed or virtual teams, helping them follow Agile principles and practices while working from different locations. They remove obstacles, ensure clear communication, and support the team's continuous improvement, all through online tools and digital collaboration platforms. Remote Scrum Masters play a key role in keeping teams aligned, fostering accountability, and ensuring that projects progress smoothly despite the lack of face-to-face interaction.

What does a remote scrum master do?

The job duties of a remote Scrum master involve overseeing the implementation of the Scrum project management framework. Scrum is a subset of the Agile framework and involves strategies to help organize and manage tasks for software development and other computer or IT projects. As a work from home Scrum master, your responsibilities mainly include planning sprints, which are smaller projects or tasks that help the team meet benchmarks for the whole project. You work remotely to assist with benchmark planning and ensure that team members have the resources and skills to complete their assigned tasks.

How to become a scrum master who works remotely?

To become a scrum master who works remotely, you need to have numerous qualifications, including education, certification, professional experience, and management tools and skills. A bachelor’s degree in computer science is often necessary, although engineering degrees are also useful. The scrum master has more project management responsibilities, but you still need to have solid programming skills. Multiple professional organizations offer certifications to become a scrum master. The certification process includes attending a training course, completing an exam, and paying a registration fee. Because you work from home, you need excellent time management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Scrum Master?

To thrive as a Remote Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum framework, and experience facilitating software development teams, often backed by certifications like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with digital collaboration tools such as Jira, Trello, or Asana, and video conferencing platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills help a Scrum Master inspire and coordinate distributed teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure transparency, foster team cohesion, and drive successful project delivery in a remote environment.

How does a remote scrum master effectively facilitate communication and collaboration within a distributed Agile team?

A Remote Scrum Master plays a crucial role in fostering open communication and collaboration among team members who may be working from different locations or time zones. This often involves leveraging digital tools such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and project management platforms to run stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. The Scrum Master must be proactive in identifying communication gaps, encouraging participation, and adapting Agile ceremonies to suit remote environments. Building trust and maintaining team engagement remotely can be challenging, but regular check-ins and transparent progress tracking help ensure everyone stays aligned and motivated.

Are Scrum Masters being phased out?

Scrum Masters remain a valuable role in Agile teams, especially as organizations adopt Scrum and other Agile frameworks. While some companies are evolving their Agile practices or integrating Scrum Master responsibilities into other roles, demand for skilled Scrum Masters with certifications and facilitation skills continues to be steady in many industries.

Are remote Scrum Masters being phased out?

Remote Scrum Masters remain in demand as organizations adopt flexible work arrangements and Agile practices. Their role in facilitating team collaboration, managing sprints, and removing obstacles continues to be essential, especially with the increased use of collaboration tools like Jira and Zoom. While some companies may shift to hybrid models, fully remote Scrum Master positions are still widely available.

The ability to work remotely often depends on company policies and project requirements.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

The Autonomy TPM team plays a key role in driving the most important initiatives within the Autonomy organization at Rivian. If you are looking for a team that just takes notes or is just a scrum master, this is not it. We are here to lead cross-functional projects that require tight execution between partner organizations like EEHW and Vehicle SW and between our Autonomy teams involving Perception, Planner, Systems, Cloud, etc.

This particular role is for developing our Remote Assistance capabilities. The scope of this role encompasses cloud and software infrastructure development to enable vehicle-to-cloud connectivity. It also includes defining how remote operators provide guidance to the vehicle, alongside designing the visual interfaces for remote operator displays.

Responsibilities
  • Lead programs consisting of cutting edge technology projects, particularly ones that intersect with hardware, software, and regulatory constraints.
  • Exercise strong ownership over programs they lead, including diving into the technical details to drive smooth execution and briefing the VP of Autonomy & AI on progress and risks.
  • Drive pragmatic decisions and tradeoffs to maximize probability of hitting critical timelines, considering factors unique to ML projects such as model iteration speed, data annotation pipelines, and compute resource allocation.
  • Manage ambiguity by presenting options with a clear point of view for leadership, particularly concerning feature readiness, evaluation metrics, and performance
    trade-offs.
  • Understand the role of TPM as an insider/outsider, someone who drives accountability through influence and soft power rather than hard power and authority.
  • Mentor other TPMs on the team and help them grow their craft as TPMs, sharing expertise in managing ML-centric technical programs.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience, with a strong foundation in areas relevant to AI/ML.

  • Experience in Technical Program Management on deep tech products or equivalent, specifically managing programs involving AI/ML components and data pipelines.

  • Hands on experience with ML-based products including evaluation with metrics driven analysis.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate to external partner organizations to drive shared outcomes for Rivian, especially when collaborating on data sharing, model deployment, or platform integration related to AI/ML.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with Autonomy systems, Robotaxis, and/or Robotics, particularly involving the integration and management of complex AI/ML models.

  • ML development in resource-constrained environments, demonstrating an understanding of the practical challenges of deploying ML on automotive-grade hardware.

  • You enjoy prototyping random side projects in your spare time, ideally related to AI/ML or robotics.

Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is $186,000-$232,500 for San Francisco Bay Area based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26, including but not limited to paid vacation, paid sick leave, and a competitive portfolio of insurance benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, short-term disability insurance, and long-term disability insurance to eligible employees. You may also have the opportunity to participate in Rivian’s 401(k) Plan and Employee Stock Purchase Program if you meet certain eligibility requirements. Full-time employee coverage is effective on their first day of employment. Part-time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment. More information about benefits is available at rivianbenefits.com.

Rivian is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local fair employment practices laws. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information or characteristics, physical or mental disability, marital/domestic partner status, age, military/veteran status, medical condition, or any other characteristic protected by law.

How We Use AI in Our Hiring Process: To ensure transparency, we want candidates to know that Rivian uses iCIMS Talent Cloud Artificial Intelligence (TCAI) and AI-enabled tools to assist with screening, reviewing, organizing and highlighting profiles and applications that match the key requirements for each role.

AI does not make hiring decisions: Qualified candidate applications are reviewed by a member of our team, and all decisions throughout the process are made by humans. We use AI to support efficiency and consistency, not to replace human judgment. We are committed to a fair, thoughtful, and equitable experience for every candidate.

Participation in AI profile matching is entirely voluntary. If you prefer that your profile not be used in this process, you can opt out at any time. Opting out means your profile will be excluded from automated matching and will not be surfaced for additional roles through this system. Your current application remains active and will not be affected in any way.

Please note that we are currently not accepting applications from third party application services.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience, with a strong foundation in areas relevant to AI/ML.
