Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects peopleโ€™s lives. We use science and tech to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. We address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics. We collaborate with journalists, TV meteorologists, and other respected messengers, reaching broad audiences through local voices in the US and 150 nations. Our research and visuals appear in thousands of TV spots and tens of thousands of other news stories each year, and our impact is growing.

About the Role
Climate Central is seeking a collaborative Writer and Associate Editor with experience in science communication. This role supports Climate Centralโ€™s editorial, creative, and communications work through science writing, cross-team editorial support, production coordination, and quality assurance. Responsibilities include writing climate-focused content and supporting the editorial operations of Climate Matters, Climate Centralโ€™s weekly data-driven publication. Reporting to the Vice President for Content Creation, this person will work across teams and projects alongside writers, designers, scientists, technologists, and communications professionals to help create timely, accurate, and engaging climate change content.
Key Responsibilities
Writing and editorial support
  • Research, write, and revise science explainers, data-driven articles and reports, and other editorial content.
  • Identify and connect with subject matter experts who can enhance our editorial content.
  • Edit and copy edit content to ensure accuracy, clarity, style, grammar, and consistency.
  • Contribute to editorial planning by identifying and developing newsworthy topics to cover based on media trends, available data, and established or emerging scientific research.
Editorial operationsย 
  • Coordinate editorial workflows to ensure timely delivery of content and adherence to production schedules for the weekly Climate Matters publication.
  • Maintain internal editorial planning and project management systems for Climate Matters and other editorial projects as assigned.
  • Support editorial leads in tracking assignments and maintaining accountability to roles, responsibilities, and deadlines in project meetings and asynchronously.
Content quality assurance
  • Coordinateย editorial, scientific, and subject matter expert review processes for Climate Matters content and other assigned editorial projects.
  • Conduct detailed pre-publication quality assurance reviews of all weekly Climate Matters assets to ensure content meets high standards for scientific accuracy, editorial quality, and functionality.

Required Skills and Experiences
  • Experience translating complex science and data into written content that is accurate, clear, concise, and broadly accessible
  • Well-developed independent research and analytical skills, which may be grounded in a variety of disciplines including journalism, STEM, social sciences, or humanities
  • Ability to synthesize background research and data analyses
  • Strong editorial judgement and attention to detail, to ensure high standards for editorial quality and scientific accuracy
  • Experience coordinating editorial operations and managing publishing workflows
  • Familiarity with project management software to track and coordinate cross-team work
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and deliverables across teams and overlapping projects
  • Familiarity with best practices for data visualization, web publishing, and digital content
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member, with colleagues of varied backgrounds and experiences
  • Demonstrated interest in climate change, environmental science, climate policy, journalism, or science communication

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Familiarity with the subject matter of Climate Centralโ€™s editorial content (i.e., climate change science and solutions) is strongly preferred
  • Creativity and a willingness to experiment with new datasets, platforms, and technologies
  • Familiarity with multimedia production (e.g., videos, data visualizations) to communicate scientific concepts and analytical results for a broad audience
  • Experience working in a remote-first environment, which requires regular virtual meetings and asynchronous communication
  • Fluency with Slack, G Suite, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Fluency with Notion, the project management software used at Climate Central

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $72,000-75,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Climate Central offers generous benefits including:

Location and employment eligibility:
This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Periodic travel to headquarters in Princeton, NJ or other locations may be required for team meetings and events. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
