Description
The California Energy Commission (CEC) under the Chief Counsel's Office, which serves as the California Energy Commission's full-service legal division, is seeking to hire three (3) student assistants who are able and willing to work in a fully remote (100% telework) environment, paired with strong mentoring and hands-on learning opportunities. The student assistants will collaborate closely with Commission attorneys and energy experts, gaining meaningful exposure to the legal and policy issues shaping California's energy landscape.
Attorneys in the Chief Counsel's Office advise the Commission as it implements laws that advance California's transition to a 100% clean and renewable energy future. We are committed to delivering the highest quality legal work in this dynamic and evolving field and regularly seek motivated, talented law students to join our office.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$17.70 - $28.08 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment while providing high-quality customer service.
  • Ability to accurately follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and Office 365 applications.
  • Experience entering, reviewing, and maintaining numerical and data-driven information with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced use of Word and Excel.
  • Experience utilizing spreadsheet, database, and internet-based data management and research applications.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, with the capacity to evaluate complex information and legal issues.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate initiative in completing assignments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, or a formerly incarcerated youth, as defined by Government Code section 18220, are strongly encouraged to apply and will receive priority consideration. Documentation verifying eligibility will be required prior to appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-depth legal research on emerging and complex issues in environmental and energy law under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel and senior attorneys.
  • Analyze and apply legal research to support Commission activities, including drafting legal memoranda, briefing materials, and rulemaking documents.
  • Assist in the development of formal legal advice by collaborating directly with attorneys leading the clerk and extern program.
  • Prepare materials for Commission meetings, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with applicable legal standards.
  • Attend and observe public workshops, hearings, and Commission meetings focused on innovative energy programs.
  • Engage with stakeholder feedback presented during public proceedings to inform legal analysis and regulatory decision-making.
  • Gain practical experience in administrative law and regulatory processes within a dynamic public sector legal environment.

Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an remote environment.
Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
